Is Val Kilmer’s Real Genius Set to Return for a Sequel?

Cult Film, Internet Rumors, Val Kilmer

Anybody who is a fan of the 1985 movie Real Genius will remember these lines:

Kent: You’re all just a bunch of degenerates
Christ Knight: We are? What about that time I found you naked with that bowl of Jell-O?
Kent: You did not.
Christ Knight: This is true.
Kent: Look, it was hot and I was hungry, okay?

Real Genius, directed by the wonderfully talented Martha Coolidge (also known for her seminal film Valley Girl), is full of some of the best quotes in the whole of the movie industry. The many fans of Real Genius will nod knowingly when speaking of its unforgettable lines. So is this movie really and truly headed for the screen and, if so, will Martha Coolidge be directing it again?

Val Kilmer has expressed his interest in working on a sequel to the movie, and internet rumors abound that he has already signed on, but that’s all conjecture at this point. It’s quite hard to tell just what is going on at this moment as there has apparently been a sequel planned since 2007.

The website Film Fodder says, “Obviously, making a sequel to a cult movie twenty years after the fact is pretty risky. It might be better just to re-do the original movie with Kilmer as a professor, but not reprising his original role. The new young stars could keep the flavor of the original (it would be “It’s a moral imperative!”), but the campus lifestyles could be updated to present day. It could work.”

I for one would be pleased beyond belief to see a sequel of this movie, especially with the original cast reprising their roles. Normally sequels to massively popular films aren’t nearly as good as their original counterparts, but with a cult film like this, if it were put into the right hands (please, Martha Coolidge!) it’s very possible that it could surpass even the original or, at the very least, be just as interesting and fun.
