Is ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Toby Cavanaugh REALLY Dead?

Pretty Little Liars, Sara Shepard, Toby

On “Pretty Little Liars” episode 21, ‘Out of Sight, Out of Mind,’ Spencer Hastings makes a startling revelation in the forest. And the revelation has caused a pretty even split among the “Pretty Little Liars” fans. Spencer discovered the body of her estranged boyfriend Toby Cavanaugh (Keegan Allen), or did she? While a large portion of the fans are content with the idea that Toby is no longer with us, an equally large portion of fans are convinced that his untimely passing was staged, or a hoax. A fake death may sound absurd, but if you’re familiar with “Pretty Little Liars,” then you know it’s really not that far-fetched of a theory. While there is an impressive list of reasons to suspect he is dead:

  • The body Spencer discovered in the woods had thesame exact tattoo that Toby has on his hip.
  • Spencer was conveniently led straight to his body by her nemesis Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish), who’s to say she didn’t stage his death to hurt Spencer?
  • In the books by Sara Shepard that the show is basedon Toby dies in the woods, so if the show is following the books then his death shouldn’t be a shock to viewers.
  • Spencer snapped in the woods, she was found by a park ranger mumbling incoherently and drooling the next day, and submitted into Radley Sanitarium. She obviously had to have seen SOMETHING in the woods to make her go into shock.

Although the evidence is overwhelming, there are also several things that don’t add up about Toby’s death, that have left a large percentage of viewers questioning it:

  • When Spencer discovered the body in the woods, it was wearing a motorcycle helmet. She seen the tattoo on the hip and assumed it was Toby, she never actually removed the helmet and verified it was him for sure. Also, she never touched the body, it very well could have been Toby, but he may have just been unconscious or pretending to be dead.
  • After Spencer admitted to seeing Toby’s body in the woods, no one was able to locate him the next day. Dead people don’t get up and walk away.
  • In Radley Spencer began hallucinating and imagining her friends were there with her, and was having a conversation with them. How can you assume someone is dead when the only person that seen their dead body is someone who is talking to imaginary people?
  • Right before Spencer followed Mona to the woods;Mona was shown making a shady business deal over the telephone and counting a large amount of cash. It’s very possible that she was paying someone to create a crime scene and stage Toby’s death.
  • The same time Spencer was in the woods with Toby’s dead body, Emily was receiving text messages from him. That could mean two things; he is very well alive or someone was using his phone and pretending to be him.

Both sides have pretty convincing arguments. With only one episode left before the season 3 finale, “Pretty Little Liars” fans are on the edge of their seats waiting to see whether Rosewood’s bad boy, gone good boy, gone bad boy, has really left the building.
