Interior Design: Covering Tall Windows

Draperies, Plantation Shutters

Having windows higher than the average can pose a problem when it comes to addressing privacy. Newer homes built with non-standard sized windows can pose a dilemma to homeowners when it comes to picking out the correct window covering.

Here are some ideas you can use if you are one of those faced with this dilemma:

1) Use custom made draperies. If you want to emphasize the grandness of the window’s height, one of the best options is to have custom made draperies. The length of ready made draperies averages at 72 to 84 inches in length, you are lucky if you find anything longer, so this option would be of advantage when addressing tall windows for a sure fit. Using custom made draperies can be expensive, so try to address those areas of concerns first like those that you need to cover for privacy. Research the company that you would use to get the best value for your money. Try calling several of drapery companies and get free window measurements and quotes then compare and choose wisely.

2) Mix and match window coverings. If, for example, you have 3 vertical rows of windows it would be a good idea to mix and match window covering. You can use blinds or plantation shutters on the lower window, and then hang your draperies from the 2nd window, then use another type of covering on the very top window. One good option would be to use a remote control silhouette blinds that you can control at a push of a button. If privacy is not an issue, you can leave the 3rd or top window uncovered to let more light in during the day.

3) Use stained glass or contact films. Be creative, use stained glass designs, like you see in churches. You can also use contact films that come in different designs, even mimicking real stained glass designs. They are very easy to install and they are an affordable alternative that can achieve the same look

4) Use ready made track shades. For a modern look, another alternative you can use is ready made shades that are on tracks that you can move either left or right when you need to open or close. This is great option for loft-style apartments/homes in the cities, which can offer a great look both inside and outside. Furthermore, it does a great job in blocking harsh sunlight while keeping the look of openness found in industrial design. The sleek, clean lines can also go very well with the minimal design.

5) Tinted or frosted windows. Another alternative you can use is tinting your windows, especially if the windows are always getting the harsh afternoon sunlight. Not only can it offer privacy, it can keep the room cooler by blocking the sunlight. Another option is using frosted windows that you normally use in the bathroom; it can offer privacy all day long, without the need of an actual window covering. This is a great idea for windows that do not have any good views or is just facing directly to your neighbor’s windows.

There you have it; hopefully these tips can help make it easier when addressing coverings for your tall windows. Choose what is best for your location, your needs, and your design.
