Instructions for Making Your Own Tassels

Adding tassels to pillows, curtains, and even bedding is a great way to dress something up and make it look more formal. Unfortunately store bought tassels can get pretty expensive. Tassels are easy to make with some simple instructions.

The best thing about these tassels is that they can easily be turned into some elegant Christmas ornaments in one easy step.

To Make Your Own Christmas Tassel Ornaments or Regular Tassels You Will Need:

Ribbon or Cording
Scissors
Stiff cardboard piece

So, you can really just about make any size tassel using these instructions. You change the size of your homemade tassel you can do one or two different things.

The first is to control the size of your tassel by controlling the size of your piece of cardboard. A 2 inch wide piece of cardboard will yield a 2-inch long tassel from top to bottom.

So, you can make you homemade tassel very large or very small, but keep the size of your ribbon or cording matching whatever size you choose. If you are going for a large tassel, then choose a thick cording, twine, rope, or round ribbon. For a smaller tassel you should use a thinner ribbon, twine, cording, or rope.

Now, another method of controlling how big your tassel is how many times you wrap your ribbon around the cardboard piece. More wraps around the cardboard the thicker and bigger your tassel will be. You will understand this step a little more by the end of the article.

Now, to tie your own tassels cut your out a strip of thick cardboard as wide as you want. You could even use a strip of wood. Just do not use a 2X4 or other thick piece of wood.

Now, take your length of ribbon, rope, twine, or whatever and start wrapping it around the strip of cardboard. I like to hold the end with my thumb on the edge of the strip of cardboard, and then wrap. Eventually it wills half itself in place.

Now, once you have wrapped the ribbon or twine to the desired fullness your can cut it off on the same end of the cardboard where you started.

Now, take a separate piece of the same ribbon, twine, rope, or whatever and cut it to about one foot long.

Now, take the ribbon or twine on the cardboard and slide it off of the cardboard. Hold it steady and do not unravel it o you will need to start over.

Now, lay it on the piece of ribbon or twine that is about 1 foot long. Lay it so that the ribbon is horizontal across the top inch of the wrapped ribbon.

Now, tie the length of ribbon that us a foot long around the tassel. I like to tie one knot securely. Then, wrap it around the top of the tassel a few more times.

Now, tie it off in a knot when you are finished and cut off any ribbon.

Finally, take your scissors and cut the bottom looped ends of your tassel straight across. This will free them at the bottom nod reveal your homemade tassel.

To add a loop to hang the tassel cut off another 6 inch to 12 inch piece of ribbon. Slip it though the top loops at the top of the tassel. Tie it off in a big loop a slide the knot under the tassel, inside where it is threaded through to hide it.
