Ideas for Decorating a Little Girl’s Playhouse

Playhouse, Valances

A playhouse is a little girl’s dream come true, especially if it is decorated to look and feel like a miniature home rather than a shed with bare walls and floors. It is a place where kids can pretend to have adult responsibilities. They learn a lot about life by observing. A structure designed for play is also a great place for napping, daydreaming and reading books about interesting people and far away places. Use these ideas for decorating a little girl’s playhouse, and add stylish decor, comfy kid-friendly furnishings and more.

When I was a child, the neighbor had a little girl’s playhouse in the backyard, but it was very sparsely decorated. It was a charming little building that looked like a scale model of a real home, but it lacked comfort and style. When her granddaughter was visiting, we used our imaginations, but it could have been much more appealing.

My former neighbor left behind a playhouse when he moved away, and he gave it to my daughter. Although she is ten, she still enjoys pretending. I have been coming up with stylish decorating ideas for my little girl’s new playhouse, and it is becoming her favorite place to spend time.

Paint the Walls a Crisp Cool Color

When decorating a little girl’s playhouse, the obvious color for walls is pink, but do not overdo bright hues. Small rooms will appear even smaller. Opt for a cool crisp satin hue instead. Fingerprints can be wiped right off. Also, if the furnishing and decorating budget allows, outfit the playhouse with insulation and drywall. It will stay much cooler inside on hot summer days, especially if it is placed in the shade.

Add Smaller Versions of Adult Furnishings

If cost is not a factor, buy smaller versions of adult furnishings when decorating your little girl’s playhouse. Otherwise, create comfy furnishings using inexpensive items that would otherwise end up in the recycling bin or trash. Cut the front and top off of a sturdy cardboard box of the appropriate size, and coat it with spray paint in a color of your choice. Place a throw pillow inside for an instant playhouse chair for little girl’s. With careful use it will last indefinitely. You can create a table just as easily with a sturdy overturned box.

Use Valances to Create Curtains for Small Windows

A little girl’s playhouse windows are typically too small for curtains of standard size. Use valances to create curtains for small windows. Tea towels or hand towels can also be used. Sew a pocket to accommodate a cafe rod. Use strings of Mardi Gras beads, scarves or ribbons to hold them back.

Decorating with Your Little Girl’s Artwork

When decorating a little girl’s playhouse, use her artwork. Buy decoupage medium and stretched canvases of the appropriate size. Apply the paper to the canvases using the decoupage medium. Be sure to cover the sides. The artwork will not require frames or glass. They are ideal for decorating a little girl’s playhouse since they will put her personal stamp on her miniature home.
