How to Stop a Puppy from Chewing on Wood Furniture

Chew Toys, Dingo, Wood Furniture

Puppies are little creatures of destruction when they’re teething, and a puppy will chew on anything to ease his pain – even your expensive wood furniture. Take your eyes off your puppy for just a few moments and you may find him chewing on the rungs of dining room chairs, wood furniture legs, beds, and anything else he can get his little mouth around. Although your doggy may currently seem like a destructive little demon, he will eventually get past the teething stage and become the ideal dog you’ve always wanted. With a few tips and puppy teething tricks, you can get your puppy to stop chewing on wood furniture once and for all.

Attention

If you can’t watch what your puppy is doing, by all means, confine him to a comfortable crate until you can keep an eye on his activities. Giving a puppy run of the house is asking for trouble, so don’t take that chance. Leaving a puppy unattended is like giving a toddler run of the house, and if he isn’t watched he’ll surely get into trouble. Your puppy just might begin chewing your wood furniture or continue chewing where he previously left off. Attention is the best method of prevention when you want to stop your puppy from chewing on wood furniture.

Stay Away Spray

Hartz Stay Off Training Aid works very well to keep pets away from specific areas. My puppy recently began chewing on my wood dining room table and I kept him away by spraying a little on a rag and applying it to the wood rungs and table legs. Although the table already looked like a beaver had gnawed completely around the leg, Hartz Stay Off Training Aid kept my puppy from chewing on the wood again and doing further damage.

Dingo Bones

Contrary to popular belief, rawhide bones are safe for dogs. They are fully digestible and safe. Rawhide bones are very helpful when you want to stop your doggy from chewing on wood furniture, especially Dingo bones. Dingo bones have meat in the middle and encourage beneficial chewing. I buy mini Dingo Brand bones for my puppy, and he absolutely loves them. I give him one mini Dingo bone every other day, and it keeps him happily chewing for hours. These bones are a great way to stop a puppy from chewing on wood furniture.

Chew Toys

Many puppies who chew aren’t only teething; some are simply bored, so provide your doggy with plenty of chew toys that will keep him entertained and away from your wood furniture. Buy a shallow basket especially for puppy toys, and fill the basket with squeak toys, nylon bones, rubber bones, and a wide variety of fun toys. When your puppy has the desire to begin chewing he’ll learn to go to his basket of toys and choose just the right ones that will keep him happy and stop him from chewing on your wood furniture.
