How to Start a Paper Route

How to start a paper round

As a teenage boy a paper round is a very easy way to earn some extra cash. Although waking up every morning seems like a lot of hard work, the money that you earn is a just reward and will make it a lot more endurable. Below are many ways to find and start a paper round.

Ask neighbors or siblings

Firstly, if you have a sibling that has a paper round ask them if they would be willing to give it to you, or to at least let you help out with them. If not then walk around your neighborhood and talk with other people your age about paper-rounds too see if anyone has a round that they would be willing to give to you.

Talk to post office

If there is no-one nearby that is willing to give up their paper round then you should go see your local newspaper store / post office. Most likely they will have a round that exists already and will give you the names and papers of these houses. You will then be able to get to work as soon as you would like. Remember, if you ask for a paper-round from a store there is no personal request as to the length or location of it, so be prepared for rounds not near your house.

Start your own

In my opinion, this is the best option. Although it takes the longest it is most likely the most rewarding. The way to do this is walk around your neighborhood knocking on peoples doors, (or leave letters on mailboxes, door hangers with messages….etc). Ask people if they would be interested in having a newspaper delivered. If they say yes then write down their details, including the paper they would like to have delivered, the days they want it to be delivered and their address. The next step is to put these all into an official document, preferably typed up. Take this document to your newspaper store and ask if you may start a paper round with the customers you give. Most likely they will say yes, however if they say no go back around your neighborhood until you have more customers.

Tips

  1. Do not annoy people, if they say no it means no. Asking on multiple occasions will only make people mad and less likely to want a paper from you.
  2. When delivering flyers make sure you they are large enough to not get lost and that they have some kind of contact detail such as your phone number or email.
  3. If you promise perfect service make sure you stick to this, and do not slack off.
  4. Be prepared for long and hard mornings, but just remember that it is all worth it.
  5. If there are ever going to be times that you cannot do your paper round make sure you have someone as back up, so that your customers still receive their paper.
