How to Register to Take the Nclex Exam

Hesi Test

If you have finished your nursing program and are ready to take your Nclex exam, you probably want to know how to register. You should get information from your school on how to register for the Nclex exam but here I have broken it down for you. Included at the end are links to websites that may help you as you register to take the Nclex exam.

Registering For Your Nclex Exam

Obviously, the first thing that you have to do is have finished your nursing classes to allow you to sit for the Nclex exam. Then, you submit an application for license from the nursing board you intend to be licensed with. You can then register with Pearson VUE to take your Nclex exam. You can register online, via the phone, or by mail and the cost for the Nclex exam is $200 (currently and this does not include other Nursing Board fees). Make sure that you fill out the registration forms completely as not doing so will most likely delay your registration and you may have to wait longer to take the Nclex exam.

Authorization To Test

You then get confirmation from Pearson VUE and your State Board of Nursing makes you eligible to sit for the Nclex exam (once your school has sent in all pertinent information). Now you will receive an authorization to test from Pearson VUE and you may schedule your Nclex exam. Do not wait to schedule as the authorization to test does expire. The expiration of the authorization to test for the Nclex exam varies from 60 to 365 days but the average is 90 days. You should receive the expiration date when you receive your authorization to test.

Scheduling Your Nclex Exam

Depending on how many people have also registered to take the Nclex exam, you may have limited dates available to test. You can check to see where Pearson VUE testing centers are located as you can take your Nclex exam at any approved center and they will have varying dates/times available. The option to take your Nclex exam out of the USA is available at limited locations for an additional $150 fee. I recommend scheduling your Nclex exam for about 2-3 weeks from your call to schedule. This amount of time will give you plenty of time to study and leave time to change your Nclex exam date if you should need to.

Re-scheduling Your Nclex Exam

If you need to, you can re-schedule your Nclex exam as long as you plan to re-schedule it within the dates listed on your Nclex exam authorization to test. Your Nclex exam may be re-scheduled on the phone or online. You must call to re-schedule at least 24 hours prior to your Nclex exam date and if your test is on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, you have to call Friday and it has to be 24 hours prior to your scheduled Nclex exam.

No Refunds On Your Nclex Exam

Take extra care to make sure you have all your information ready before you submit payment for your Nclex exam. Pearson VUE does not offer refunds even if an outside factor makes you unable to sit for your Nclex exam. Make sure that you do not accidentally submit payment twice since Pearson VUE will not even refund your Nclex exam fee even for that. If you have to re-schedule, make sure that you get a confirmation of the re-scheduling and new Nclex exam date, if you do not, you may end up paying again to take the Nclex exam.
