How to Paint a Beach Scene

Painting a beach scene for the Hawaiian Cub Scout Blue and Gold may be easier than you think!

Materials:

Paper, Canvas, or Wood, dimensions chosen by you

(I use acrylic paint.)

Blue paint

Brown paint

Yellow paint

White paint

Purple paint

Pencil

Paint brush

I used donated end roll newsprint paper to make this painting. On this sheet I drew a simple ocean scene. When used for the Cub Scout Blue and Gold Hawaii theme, make sure you choose the dimensions of the paper according to the size of the podium stand. Of course, these are basic directions and can be used for painting on canvas as well!

Imagine the paper being divided horizontally into thirds, and divided vertically into fourths. Start by drawing a horizon line leaving the top 1/3 above the horizon, and the bottom two thirds below it.

Now on the right draw a volcano or a rounded mound that crosses the horizon line on both the top and bottom. (Use less than two fourths of the paper for the volcano). Leave some white space at the top of the volcano and make sure the bottom stops before the bottom 1/3 of the paper.

Draw a volcano onto the left side of the paper. But, drop this one down about an inch lower than the other volcano and use only about ¼ of the paper. (Allow this volcano to fall off of the left side of the page.) This should make the volcano appear to be closer in the picture plane than the other one.

Draw a curved line in the bottom 1/3 of the paper. This is going to be the beach front.

Now in the foreground of the paper draw little flowers. I drew a flower with a four petal design, and two leaves. These flowers should go up the side of the paper and across the bottom of the page. These flowers will make sort of a semi-frame to your work.

I used acrylic paints to paint this picture. The sky was a light blue, with an over layer of white clouds. The mountain in the background needs to be a shade darker than the mountain in the front. The ocean at the horizon line needs to be a dark blue, but it needs to fade in color until it reaches the beach. As the water laps onto the shore, it needs to be a whitish blue.

Use the lightest brown mixed with white to paint the beach, once the beach paint is dry, paint in the flowers with yellow, purple and bright green.

This is a very simple painting but it looks really nice as the centerpiece on the front of the podium stand for the Cub Scout Blue and Gold Hawaiian Theme Banquet. If you decide to make this a lasting work, just paint it either on wood, or canvas. Notice that on wood the paint soaks into the wood and dries much faster. You will also need more paint!
