How to Make a Tissue Paper Rose

The Wire, Tissue Paper

A single tissue paper rose or a bouquet of the roses is an excellent gift for a birthday, anniversary, Christmas or as a ‘just because’ gift. Teachers, parents and friends all enjoy a handmade item, especially when it is made by someone they know. This beautiful handmade paper rose also makes a good gift for someone in the hospital or nursing home.

Supplies:

Red and green tissue paper
Ruler
Scissors
3-inch diameter container or cup
Stapler and staples
12-inch wire floral stem
Floral tape

Process:

Step 1 – Measure and cut 18, 4-inch squares of red tissue paper. The squares do not have to be precise, but larger than the 3-inch diameter container or cup. Stack the tissue paper squares in stacks of four.

Step 2 – Turn the 3-inch diameter container or cup upside down on a stack of tissue paper squares. Trace around the outside of the container or cup. Pick up the stack and cut along the line to create four circles 3-inches in diameter. Repeat the process with the remaining stacks of tissue paper for a total of 18, 3-inch circles.

Step 3 – Create a ½-inch loop bend at the end of the floral stem. This is the center of the rose. Use the opposite end of the floral stem and push it through the center of one 3-inch tissue paper circle. Slide the circle up the shaft of the wire until it rests directly below the ½-inch loop. Slide five more circles up the wire stem using the same process. Secure the circles to the wire by stapling across the wire floral stem directly below the tissue paper circles. Repeat this process two more times for a total of 18 circles on the wire stem.

Step 4 – Cut or tear a piece of floral tape approximately 24-inches long. Hold one end of the floral tape over the staple directly below the tissue paper circles. Pull the floral tape slightly and wrap it around the wire directly under the circles to cover the staple. Continue to pull the floral tape slightly and wrap the remaining length of tape around the floral stem to create the stem of the flower.

Step 5 – Measure and cut three, 4-inch squares of green tissue paper. Stack the three squares on top of one another. Cut a leaf shape from the squares approximately 1 ½-inch wide at the widest point and 3-inches long. Secure the leaves to the stem with floral tape.

Step 6 – Fluff the tissue paper circles into a rose in bloom. Start with the first circle and place your fingers around the outside edge of the circle. Slide your fingers under the circle to the wire. Gently pull up with your fingers and create a funnel shape with the tissue paper. Repeat the process with each circle.
