How to Make a Bike Repair Stand

Bike Repair, The Conduit

This project comes from the mind of a friend, and to him I owe a great deal because my projects were getting more and more complex, and his well, he always seems to go the simple yet efficient route. Nonetheless, here is the bike stand or bike repair stand. Basically this is a tool used for when you want to repair a flat tire or loose chain without your bike tipping over on you while you’re doing so.

Step One:
The main material is pipe, and of course pipe fitters. You’re also going to need end caps for the ends of the pipe that aren’t connected to other pieces of pipe.

First take your first piece of pipe and connect it to another pieces using a “T” fitter. Then you add the angle fitter to the end of the pipe. When you’re finished the end result should be an 8 inch piece of pipe with a “T” fitter in the middle, an end cap on the end of the pipe that isn’t connected to anything, and an angle fitter on the other end of the pipe. Make sure you tighten it so that they aren’t loose. A loose bike stand means a falling bike, possibly on you so, make sure you have a wrench in hand.

Step Two:
You’re going to repeat the first step so that you have two leg pieces. Now, take a three inch piece of pipe and insert it through the “T” fitter in the middle of the first leg. Do the same with the other leg and then connect another angle piece, this time a 45 degree angle piece. When you’re finished you should have two leg pieces with a 45 degree angle piece on both of the leg pieces.

Step Three:
You have to put a “T” fitter in the middle of the two 10 inch pipe pieces in order for them to join together. Now, to complete the base, take two 10 inch pipe pieces and connect them by inserting each pipe piece through each 90 degree angle fitter on the legs. Make sure the pieces are tight enough by using your wrench.

Take your long piece and screw it into the “T” fitter in the back. By the way, your base should be flat on the ground.

Step Four:
Next take two 18 inch pieces of pipe and insert them into the two 45 degree angle fitters. The pipes should be facing a diagonal direction or slanted upward. Take the two pieces and bend them so they lean on the piece in the back. Using hose clamps secure the two pipe pieces.

Step Five:
Finally take a 90 degree angle fitter and screw it on the end of the back pipe piece. Next take a 10 inch piece and screw it on the end of the 90 degree angle fitter and then use an end cap to close off the exposed end.

For the cross base, you need a 1×2 piece of wood. You’re going to drill two holes in the wood. Take two metal hooks and mount them in the holes in your wood. Drill one more hole in the middle and secure a conduit hanger with a nut, a washer, and a bolt. Now using a bolt secure the conduit hanger to the end cap of your bike stand. If done correctly the bike should hold secure without any problems.
