How to Get Rid of Mold and Mildew Naturally

Mildew, Mold and Mildew, Natural Cleaning Products

Mold and mildew is commonly found in areas that are moist and warm. Since these substances can be toxic to ingest or inhale accidentally, it is important to get rid of mold and mildew immediately. While expensive cleaning products can be dangerous to use, natural cleaning products can help to diminish the mold and mildew, leaving a clean surface.

Cleaning Mold and Mildew: Vinegar

Use an old spray bottle and fill it up with white vinegar. Vinegar is a very strong cleaning agent that can help get rid of stains and other spots. Spray the mold or mildew with the vinegar and allow it to sit for approximately 3 minutes. Using a piece of cloth or scrub brush, massage the mold and mildew spot until it’s completely gone. You may have to repeat this process a few times.

Cleaning Mold and Mildew: Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is another well known substance used for cleaning. In a spray bottle, add 2 cups water to 2 teaspoons tea tree oil. Mix the products well and spray onto the mold and mildew stain. Allow the mixture to stand for 3 to 4 hours. Once the time is up, wipe down the spot using a wash cloth. Repeat this process until the area is free of mild and mildew.

Cleaning Mold and Mildew: Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide does a great job at removing mold and mildew safely without leaving a strong odor. Put hydrogen peroxide (1 to 3%) in a spray bottle and spray the affected area. Using a cloth, scrub the area until the entire area is clean. Remember to work up, instead of scrubbing down to effectively clean the mold and mildew.

Cleaning Mold and Mildew: Pine Oil

Pine oil is known to kill mold and mildew and leaves a terrific smell. Make a mixture of 12 drops of pine oil, ¼ cup white vinegar, ¼ cup water, and 3 drops of any brand dishwashing soap. Clean the area thoroughly with this mixture and wipe off the excess using a cloth. The results should be mold and mildew free with a refreshing scent.

Cleaning Mold and Mildew: Borax

Borax is similar to chlorine bleach, but it is not as harsh. While borax may be effective at cleaning mold and mildew, it should be a last resort as it is very hard on fabrics. To make a cleaning mixture using borax, combine 1 cup of borax with 1 gallon of warm water. Use the mixture to scrub the area until the mold and mildew is gone.

Cleaning Mold and Mildew: Conclusion

Always remember to clean small sections at a time using the natural cleaning products to see how the fabric will react. I recommend wearing gloves and a facial mask to avoid inhaling or touching any toxic chemicals during the cleaning products. You may have to repeat a cleaning technique multiple times or combine a few to get the results you are looking for. Always allow the area to completely dry before using again.
