How to Get a Washington CDL License

Cdl, Hazardous Materials

The Washington Department of Licensing manages the driver’s license programs for commercial drivers. Individuals seeking a job as a truck or bus driver (or operator of certain other large vehicles) must first pass a knowledge and skills test to get a Washington commercial driver’s license. After passing the tests, applicants must also attend an approved CDL training course if seeking their first license. They can then get a Washington CDL license from the DOL after completing the course.

Step 1:

Study for the Washington CDL test. The first part of the test is a written knowledge test. The second part is a skills test (with driving test for certain classes of vehicles). To get more information on both tests, go to a Washington Department of Licensing (DOL) office and pick up the Washington CDL manual. Alternatively, you can study the Washington “Commercial Driver Guide” online at Dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/cdlguide.pdf.

Step 2:

Preferably, go ahead and get the knowledge test out of the way before your training. The reason for this is that you want to be familiar with CDL rules and practices before you attend training. This will give you a head start and let you focus on the skills and driving portions when getting your training. Go to a local Washington DOL after you have prepared by studying the Washington CDL manual.

Note that you can supplement your study of the CDL manual by looking for additional CDL study material online. Search for “CDL study guide” and “CDL practice test” in a search engine.

Note: Before going to take your written CDL test in Washington, make sure you have obtained a DOT medical card, signed by a doctor who has examined and certified that you are physically fit to be a commercial driver. You can print out the exam form at Fmcsa.dot.gov/documents/forms/649f.pdf.

Step 3:

Next, you should preferably attend a Washington CDL training course. In Washington, there is a special requirement for first-time license applicants. You must attend an approved training program. The DOL approves various programs throughout the state. Some train you on school buses or passenger buses. Other programs train you to operate a truck. Go to the “xx” page on the DOL website and contact a school to get more information.

After completing your training, you will receive a certificate. You need that certificate in order to get your Washington CDL license.

Step 4:

Go back to the DOL to complete your skills test. Speak to your training school about getting a vehicle for the skills test. The Washington DOL does not provide a vehicle for the skills/driving test.

Step 5:

Get your Washington CDL license after successfully completing your skills test. Keep in mind that you cannot driver interstate unless you are 21. This is a federal requirement that applies to all states.

Note: Many truckers haul hazardous materials like fuel and other substances. You must get a HAZMAT endorsement to do this job. The federal government requires a safety threat assessment to hold a hazardous-materials endorsement. You can apply at Hazprints.com.

Note: An employer can certify that you are qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle without the required training. Ask your employer about this possibility before paying to attend a driving school in Washington.
