How to Get a Messy Hairstyle

Hot Rollers, Messy Hair, Messy Hair Look

As new styles are arising and the latest trends are being worn everywhere you look, you are sure to see some messy hairstyles that are the new fashion craze. The messy hair look is becoming very popular because it’s so easy to do and looks trendy and sexy. A messy hair style can be worn with short, medium or long length hair and there really isn’t any “right” way to do it.

How to Get a Messy Hairstyle – Preparation

Begin by washing your hair with a volume shampoo and conditioner to add body and texture to the hair. I recommended using the Herbal Essences Collection for a variety of hair specialties. You can find a specific shampoo and conditioner by Herbal Essences by clicking here.

Once your hair is clean, gently comb it out using a wide tooth comb or pick. Do not use a brush because this can cause split ends and damage to the hair. Take your time and work through knots and tangles in order to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.

Next, you will need to blow dry the hair. You can allow it to air dry if you’d like but this can take away from the volume effect. While the hair is still damp, spray in a heat protection spray in order to keep the hair safe from the heat of the blow dryer. Also, take a volumizing moose and rub a quarter size amount into the roots for extra body. I recommend using the John Frieda Volumizing Moose. You can find this by clicking here.

Finish by blowing drying the hair until completely dry, focusing on the roots to add body. Once the hair is dry, give it a blast with the cold air from your hair dryer to seal the cuticles.

How to Get a Messy Hairstyle – Styling

There are two basic ways to get a messy look to your hair while still keeping it easy and making sure that it doesn’t look too “overdone”.

The first way requires a crimping iron. Begin by putting your hair into sections to allow more space to work in. Take one section down at a time and grab about one inch of hair. Using your heated crimper, crimp only the very top of the hair, directly next to the scalp. This will allow the hair to get the messy, volumized look. Avoid crimping the front of the hair because you want to keep the crimped part hidden. For the front, try teasing and adding volumizing hairspray to finish off the look.

The second way to get a messy hairstyle is to use large hot rollers. Roll your head entirely in hot rollers but avoid the front hairline. Leave the rollers in for about four minutes then remove the hot rollers, tip your head upside down and shake out the curls. Run your fingers through your hair to finish off this messy look.
