How to Find the Best DVD Bargains

Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery, New Releases

As a DVD Collector and owner of over a thousand different DVDs, I have searched far and wide for the best prices on DVDs and depending how and what condition you want your DVDs in, there are many different options.

The best way to get DVDs for cheap, is to buy them used. An average new DVD is around twenty dollars at most locations, and if there are a couple of titles you are looking to buy, the prices can add up quick. Buying used DVDs, will up the quantity of movies purchased and save you a lot of money. One of the best ways to buy used is at your local rental chain.

Blockbuster, Movie Gallery, and Hollywood Video all offer Previously Viewed DVDs (PVDs) at a price way below buying them new. Blockbuster’s pricing varies by store locations, but most of them are 3 for $30 and older titles are priced at 4 for $20. Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video are essentially the same thing, but worded different, as Buy 2 Get 2 Free. Basically at any rental chain you will be paying around $30 for four movies, which is a great bargin.

Buying used at rental chains has it’s risks though. Popular movies tend to get rented out a lot and the wear and tear and scratches on the discs can cause them to skip or not even work the first time you buy them. All three chains listed above offer a lifetime guarantee on all the PVDs, so if the copy you happen to purchase is not playing correctly then you can exchange for a copy of that same movie.

Other places to buy used DVDs, are video game stores like Game Stop, and EB Games, and electronics chain F.Y.E also has great offers on used DVDs. Online, eBay is one of the most popular places to buy DVDs, and can be cheaper than any of the stores, but be weary because some sellers may try to sell burned copies of DVDs, that are not the official disc, and quality and legal rights can become an issue. Look for pictures of the disc or “factory sealed” when searching for DVDs on eBay.

Other than eBay there are many other websites selling DVDs, that are new, for a bargain. One of the best sites to buy them on is Deep Discount DVD. There are constant sales on Deep Discount DVD, and almost all of their orders offer free shipping. New releases are usually cheaper than most stores, but you just have to wait a few days after it is released before receiving the DVD in the mail.

If you need to have the newest release and used or online shopping is not your thing, there are many options for buying new DVDs in stores at the cheapest price. Best Buy and Wal-Mart are two of the biggest DVD retailers and they always have sales on new DVDs. The best part about Best Buy’s DVDs are that they usually come with a bonus exclusive. The recently released DVD Smokin’ Aces came with a Best Buy exclusive deck of cards, and was on sale for only $16.99. That is a great price for the DVD alone, never mind the cards.

Wal-Mart sells their new releases in “DVD-2 Packs”, where they will package an older movie or bonus disc with exclusive content. The “DVD- 2 Packs” are priced at $20, but just the regular movie of most new releases are around $17.

T.V Boxed Sets are gaining more and more popularity, with older favorites being released and new seasons coming out faster, giving fans time to catch up on missed episodes. But T.V boxed sets can become pricey. The best way to buy T.V Boxed sets is to wait a couple of months and look on eBay, or for new releases Deepdiscountdvd.com. Most stores will price the box sets high, and it will take a while for them to come on sale.

Rare or limited edition DVDs are best to buy brand new. Sure you might come across a cheap one on eBay, but chances are you will not or the price will be higher than retail. The first week of release is the best time to buy these sets, because some sets are impossible to find. Jarhead was released in two formats, a two-disc limited edition set and a standard single disc. Two weeks after release the two-disc set was no where to be found.

DVD bargain hunting can be fun and frustrating but once you find the one you’ve been looking for at a cheap price, it is all worth it.
