How to Cancel eBay Accounts

Ebay Fees, Ebay Stores, What to Sell on Ebay

eBay.com is the largest online auction site in the world. Millions of users use their eBay accounts to bid on auctions, buy flat-rate merchandise from sellers and list their own merchandise and services in user-created auctions. Having an eBay account is free, although selling on eBay carries some fees. If you’ve become dissatisfied with eBay and have decided to close an eBay account, chances are good this has only compounded your frustration with the website. eBay deliberately makes it difficult to close an account permanently, but with some patience, you can close your eBay account in just a few minutes.

Pay any outstanding eBay fees.
This includes fees for your eBay stores, outstanding balances, insertion fees, listing costs and percentage fees of any sales. If your account has any outstanding balance, eBay won’t be able to close your account for you. You can make a one-time payment with your PayPal account or any major credit card by logging into your account and clicking the “Account” tab in the dashboard menu. From there, click “You can make a one-time payment using PayPal or another payment method” under your account summary and follow the on-screen instructions for paying your remaining balance.

Open a request to cancel your account.
This will close your entire account. You will not be able to buy or sell anything on eBay after closing your account, although it will remain open for some time after you submit the request while eBay verifies that you have no outstanding transactions or balances. Go to the submission form for requesting eBay account cancellation, which is here: http://cgi1.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?CloseAccount

Tell eBay why you want to close your account.
Select from the drop-down menu your reason for closing the account. You can choose from “Security Concerns,” “Billing Issues,” “Account Issues,” “Frustration Using the Website,” “Personal Reasons” and “Business Reasons.” Whatever reason you choose, you’ll get a second list of reasons specific to your selection from the drop down menu. This helps eBay narrowly identify why you’re closing the account. Click “Continue” button when you’ve selected the exact reason for your cancellation.

The next page will give you a “possible solution” to the problem you just told eBay about.
eBay doesn’t want to lose your business and it’s not going to let you, a viable customer, just walk away without having a say first. Before allowing you to close your account, eBay will list a possible response and solution to the problem you indicated was your initial reason for wanting to close your account. It’s just one more hoop to jump through before completing your account closure. Beneath the solution, you’ll see a drop-down menu with three choices: “Yes, I’d like to keep my account open;” “Yes, but I still want to close my acount” and “No, please close my account.” Click one of the last two and click “Continue.

Confirm that you really, really, really want to cancel eBay.
The system will prompt you a few times to verify that you’re absolutely, positively sure that you want to close your account. Again, eBay is a business and has several tactics designed to keep you from permanently closing your account. Just follow the prompts and verify that you do want to close the account, until you reach the screen telling you that your account has been successfully canceled.

Wait for email confirmation that eBay has approved your cancellation request.
eBay will review your account prior to approving your request. This may take a week or more. When it has approved your request to close your account, you’ll receive an email confirmation at the email address listed in your eBay account. In the interim, you won’t be able to use your eBay account to bid, buy, sell or create listings, but you will be able to view your account information.
