How to Become a Texas Insurance Adjuster

Adjuster, Insurance Adjuster, Texas Am, Texas State Parks

An insurance adjuster can work for either insurance companies or insurance policy holders. An adjuster essentially places an amount on damages related to an insurance claim. The claim adjusters may disagree but eventually usually come to an out-of-court insurance settlement. Certain types of Texas insurance adjusters must get an insurance adjuster’s license before representing clients in the state. Even newbies to insurance adjustment can take a fairly inexpensive course online. Some courses are designed specifically to aid applicants in studying for and passing the Texas insurance adjuster’s exam. After passing the exam (or taking a course in some situations), applicants can then get a Texas insurance adjuster’s license and represent insurers or the insured in Texas claims.

Step 1:

Access the “Texas Department of Insurance Licensing Information Bulletin.” This guide gives you the steps for applying for and getting a Texas insurance adjuster’s license (see Sources). It also covers other insurance licenses for Texas, such as Texas insurance agents. This is a Prometric publication. Prometric is the exam administrator, so you need to get fully familiar with this publication if you want to become a Texas claims adjuster.

Note: Texas does not have any specific insurance adjuster course requirements to obtain a license. Rather, it is up to each individual to study and pass the adjuster exam to get a Texas license. Below, you will find an option for preparing for the insurance adjuster’s exam. However, this is not an endorsement of any course. It is up to you to determine the best way to prepare for the exam.

Note: If you take certain approved courses within 12 months of your Texas insurance adjuster’s license application, you can skip the test and apply directly for a license.

Step 2:

Get Texas insurance adjuster training. The kind of course you need depends on which test you will be taking. As one option, you could sign up for a course with Insurance-Schools.com. The following types of licenses and tests are available or required: all lines adjuster, property and casualty adjuster, public adjuster, workers compensation adjuster. With this company, you can simply complete a course for the Texas all lines adjuster and property and casualty adjuster license. Ask the Texas Department of Insurance about other approved programs that provide an exam exemption (see Sources).

Step 3:

Check your progress with exam content outlines before taking the exam. Go to Prometric.com/texas to access the official examination content outlines. Use the outline as a checklist to make sure you have studied each category of information that may be tested on the Texas insurance adjuster’s exam.

Step 4:

Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check. This is for Texas residents only, but even nonresident Texas public insurance adjusters must submit fingerprints. Download the fingerprint form and instructions at tdi.state.tx.us/forms/lhllicensing/Fastform_Final.pdf.

Step 5:

Apply for and take the test. The Prometric bulletin has the exam registration form and ordering details. You can generally get a Texas insurance adjuster’s license if you pass the test. However, you have an additional requirement if you want to work for insured individuals as a Texas public adjuster. You must post a $10,000 bond. Download the bond form at tdi.state.tx.us/forms/lhllicensing/lhl256.pdf.

Step 6:

Fill out and submit the Texas insurance adjuster’s license application. The Prometric bulletin also has this license application form.
