Hosting a Southern Belle Baby Shower

Baby Shower Decorations, Hosting a Baby Shower, Parasols

A woman doesn’t stop being a Southern Belle when she is about to have a baby; in fact, she becomes even more of one. A Southern girl will welcome her new little one with the same charm and grace she does everything, and she will appreciate a baby shower that reflects her Southern flare. If you are hosting a baby shower for a Southern Belle you love, even if she lives in Northern California or Vermont, there are many lovely ways you can make this baby shower special for her. This article will provide you with tips and suggestions for hosting the perfect Southern Belle baby shower.

Invitations. Use pastel card stock to create your Southern Belle baby shower invitations – light pink or blue, or a soft yellow. One nice tough is to glue a coordinating lace bow at the top. You can also add baby shower appliqués such as booties, bottles or carriages. To purchase ready-made invitations, click here for some lovely ideas.

Decorations. Combine classic baby shower decorations with Southern Belle touches such as ruffles, gloves and parasols. One adorable idea is to fill plastic baby booties with small bouquets of Southern flowers such as freesias or magnolias. If a carriage is one of the gifts at your Southern Belle baby shower, use ribbons to secure a parasol to the handles (parasols can actually be quite practical for new moms, as they can shield babies from the sun when sitting outside for a little fresh air.)

Favors. White, pale pink or pale blue votives wrapped in tulle and tied with ribbons are very Southern Belle. You can personalize the candles with labels commemorating the occasion, such as “Thank you from Baby (last name)”. The small plastic booties mentioned above make great favors as well – fill them with colored M&Ms; or mini jelly beans. Choose pastel colors in keeping with both traditional baby showers and Southern Belle flare.

Guestbook. Another wedding tradition that is wonderful at a bridal shower, too. Have the guests write out all of their best wishes for the newest Belle (or Rhett Butler.) This makes a great keepsake for the new mom. For a true Southern touch, have guests sign squares of fabric and have the squares made into a quilt.

Menu. Serve traditional Southern fare such country fried chicken or barbecue chicken, homemade biscuits and preserves, coleslaw, or gumbo. Sweet tea and lemonade should be served for beverages, and for dessert, try pecan pie or peach cobbler.

Cake. Charm cakes are traditional at Southern Belle weddings but can also be very sweet at a baby shower. Choose silver charms of booties, rattles, carriages and other new baby items. These are tied with a ribbon and placed beneath the layers of the cake or underneath it. Have each guest pull a ribbon and then attach them to a card for everyone to sign. The charms can be used to create a lovely Southern Belle keepsake bracelet for the mom to be or for the new little one.
