Homemade Mother’s Day Card Ideas

Mother's Day Card Ideas, Shadowbox

Store purchased cards are very commonly given for Mother’s Day, but they usually lack the personality and sentimental value that a homemade card provides. Homemade cards are extremely easy to make, and have an extra personal touch that your mother or wife will truly appreciate. With these basic craft and scrapbook supplies, you can make a homemade Mother’s Day card.

Card Stock

Craft and scrapbook supply stores sell a variety of card stock papers in almost any color imaginable. You may choose to use love related colors, like red and pink, or make the card using your mother or wife’s favorite color. Use the card stock to create the body of the card by folding it in half. You may also choose to create the card with a fun shape, such as a heart or circle. To do this, fold the card the card stock in half. Draw the shape on the front of the paper, so that it is lined up with the folded edge. When you cut the shape out, cut through both layers of paper, avoiding the inside edge.

Printed Scrapbook Paper

A beautiful printed scrapbook paper will add extra decoration and detail to the card. Strips of printed scrapbook paper can be used to decorate the edges of the card, or you may choose to cover the entire cover of the card with printed paper. When choosing your paper, choose colors and designs that coordinate with the color of the card stock.

Three-dimensional Embellishments

Three-dimensional embellishments add additional details to a homemade card, and are one of the easiest ways to personalize one. Colored craft gems, ribbons, hearts and photo corners are all three-dimensional embellishments that are appropriate for a homemade Mother’s Day card. You can incorporate ribbon into the card by punching two holes through the inside edge of the card and looping the ribbon through. Secure the ribbon into a bow.

Another three-dimensional embellishment to consider are pop-dots. Pop-dots are used to make paper embellishments such as photos and paper cutouts stand up off of the surface of the card. Paper hearts applied with pop-dots will create a beautiful effect the recipient will enjoy. Personal messages written on the paper hearts will add even more sentimental value to the card.

Photographs

Photographs are one of the most personal things you can add to a homemade Mother’s Day card. You may choose to adhere the photo to the front of the card with embellished photo corners or create a shadowbox effect by cutting a hole in the front of the card and gluing the photo to the back. This way the photograph will show through the front of the card.

Messages

The message you write inside of the card is very important. Whether the card is for your mother or wife, a list of things that make that person so special to you is an appropriate and thoughtful idea. Other ideas could include a poem, or a particular famous quote that expresses your feelings.

Pop-Ups

Pop-ups can add extra detail to the inside of your card, and are very simple to make. To create a pop-up for the inside of your card, you will need a paper embellishment to”pop up” and a thin strip of construction paper or card stock. Fold the construction paper or card stock accordion style. Glue one side to the back of the paper embellishment and the other side to the inside of the card. This way, the card will lay flat when closed. When the recipient opens the card, the paper embellishment will pop up.

Pretty Petals

Incorporate mom’s favorite flowers into her card by adding pressed petals.Take several petals from a bouquet of her favorite flowers and press them between the pages of a heavy book. This will dry the petals out and preserve them. Glue them carefully onto the card for a beautiful finishing touch.
