Homemade Gift Ideas: Engrave a Wooden Canister Set

Homemade Gift Ideas, Wood Burning

Looking for a unique and homemade gift for someone special in your life? This engraved wooden Canister Set is an elegant, stylish, and extremely useful gift that anyone can make. You can also engrave these wooden Canister Sets for a bridal shower, wedding present, birthday gift or even as a Mother’s Day gift.

You should buy good quality wooden Canister Sets that you think are appropriate. I say go for it and buy the flour, sugar, tea, and coffee canisters and make the whole set.

I bought my wooden Canister Set for about $40 at Bed Bath and Beyond and they are perfect for this easy wood burning craft project. Most of the wood burning will be completed on the front and sides of the canisters, so keep that in mind.

To Make an Engraved Wooden Canister Set for a Gift You Will Need:

1 Wooden Canister Set Wood Burning Tool

Now, once you have bought you wood Canister Set you can determine what design or words you want to engrave with your wood burning tool. I recommend small designs or words. You can engrave your “flour” or other words in the middle, then concentrate on small patterns that highlight the lines of the canisters.

Now, you can do anything from simple words to a more difficult image. The trick is to transfer it to your wood Canister Set.

Lay your wooden Canister Set out on a sheet of white paper. Trace the shapes of each individual canister out. Mostly you need to sketch how wide and tall each side is. Now, you will need to work slightly smaller inside of this area you traced.

Whatever image or words you chose to engrave on the Canister Set you can use a sheet of graphite to transfer the design to your canisters . Simply lay the sheet of graphite down first, and then lay out your image, words, or whatever on top. Now, use a pen to trace all the needed lines, edges, and details.

Tip: Tape your graphite down at the top. Tape your image down at the top of the paper as well. Now, when you are working you can easily lift them up and take a peek at how your image or words are coming out on the wooden canister handle.

If you move the image out of place without the tape, it will be almost impossible to return it to the right spot.

The only other tip I can think to give you is to trace the image or words with a red ink pen. You will see where you have traced and where you have not.

Now, once you have finished tracing your image onto the wooden Canister Set it is time to start engraving the image with your wood-burning tool.

You can buy wood burning tools at almost any arts and craft store or art supply store. The choice is yours.

Now, to use a wood-burning tool the rules are simple. All you need to do is first read the instructions it came with. Now, before you plug the tool in you need to install the tip you want to use. Now plug the wood-burning tool in.

It works just like a pencil. I recommend having a scrap piece of wood you can play around on nearby.

Simply place the hot tip down and start tracing out your image or words on the wood canisters . You can outline them like a coloring book and later change the wood-burning tip to a wider one to fill in.

You can also make small dots to create your words or images on the wood Canister Set.

When you have finished be sure to apply a coat or two of mineral oil to the Canister Set to protect them if they do not have a shiny clear coat on them. This is an awesome gift, bridesmaid gift, Mother’ Day gift, or birthday gift for anyone who loves to cook or decorate.
