Burping

Burp cloths and new babies are two things that should not be separated. From birth until around six months old your baby will spit up. Sometimes a baby spits up with a burp. Burp cloths are a parents friend and protector. They are also mess cleaners. A good burp cloth is trustable and reliable, always there when you need it. Parents of new babies need to have plenty of fresh burp cloths ready at all times. It is good to have at least ten to twelve. Your new baby deserves the very best of everything that life can give them. All baby items should be simply adorable. That’s just the way it is. This even includes burp cloths. Yeah, they’re meant to get spit up on. That’s okay. They should be the cutest thing your baby will ever spit up on.

To begin gather your supplies. Crafters likely will have all they need on hand already. Fabric is the first item you’ll need. Cotton is soft and non irritating. It is also absorbent. For a little boy you could choose trains, trucks, tractors, sailboats, dinosaurs, or frogs. The list goes on forever. The next items you’ll need are a needle and thread, or a sewing machine. You’ll also need a hard edged ruler, scissors, and common pins. To begin making your baby burp cloth measure your cloth to be ten and a half inches wide by fourteen and a half inches long. Burp cloths are generally longer than they are wide.

Once you’ve measured out your first piece to those measurements you’ll need to do it again. Burp cloths contain two same sized pieces of fabric. It is a fun idea to mix and match. Maybe you could put a rose bud print on one side and a solid pastel pink on the other. The possibilities to mix and match baby print fabrics are endless. Make your lines with a fabric marking pen using the hard edged ruler.

Once both pieces are measured it’s time to cut. Make sure you’ve chosen sharp scissors for the easiest and best cut. Otherwise your edges will be messy, damaged and frayed. Once both of your pieces are cut turn them so that the pattern sides face each other. Doing this allows the seams to be on the inside.

Make sure that the two pieces of fabric are perfectly aligned and then move to a top corner. Working down the side of the cloth, fold over one quarter of an inch and pin.

Once your first side is pinned go to the other side and do the same. Then move to the bottom. Then pin all but three inches of the top. Leave the three inches open so that you have a spot to turn the burp cloth right side out. You’ll close the hole later on.

Once you’ve pinned the sides and ends it’s time to stitch. A needle and thread works just as well as a sewing machine. Stitch each side twice. Remove the pins as you go along. Do the same for the ends. Stitching the seams twice adds strength. Burp cloths will be washed almost every day. They need to be strong.

Once all of the sides and ends are sew it’s time to turn the burp cloth right side out. It’ll be beautiful. Use the three inch hole to do this. Once the cloth is right side out fold under the edges of the hole one quarter of an inch. Do not use pins. Hold firmly with your fingertips and hand stitch. You can edge burp cloths with lace or satin ribbon to cover the stitches if desired. Taking tiny stitches makes it so that the seam doesn’t show. There you have it! Home made designer burp cloths.
