Hefty’s New OneZip Fresh Extend Bags

Fresh Fruits, Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, Green Bags

The Hefty OneZip Fresh Extend bags are supposed to be designed to keep a variety of fruits and vegetables fresh longer. With the price of fresh fruits and vegetables I wanted them to last me longer without any waste. Wal-Mart’s had them on one of their end caps for a fair price last week so I thought I would try them. I bought a box of 20 of the 1.25 gallon size. The instructions tell you not to mix vegetables or fruits in the same bag. I followed the instructions as directed but had some very bad results with the green bags. My food ripened even faster than usual and they had a very bad taste to them.

My husband enjoys a banana every morning for breakfast. On the second day of putting them in the Hefty OneZip Fresh Extend bags he complained of the banana having a funky taste. On the third day he cut one of the bananas open to find it mushy and brown on the inside of the peeling. The outside of the peeling did not look that ripe. I had purchased them when they were partially green. I checked my strawberries which had been in a separate bag in the refrigerator for the same length of time and they also had gotten over ripened and had to be thrown out.

I had the same bad results from my vegetables. The iceberg lettuce had turned brown and had to be thrown out. I had been getting better results from the Tupperware lettuce keeper that I had previously been using. My tomatoes also had a terrible flavor and had to be thrown out. The food was going bad from the inside to the outside. I could tell this by looking at the bananas and the tomatoes. The skin of the fruits would look better until you cut it open and see the damage on the inside.

Needless to say I am very disappointed with this new product from Hefty. Hefty products have always been one of my favorites until now. I will finish using the box that I bought but I will not use them for fruits and vegetables. I see advertisements all the time on the television of different brands of green bags made especially for preserving your fresh fruits and vegetables. This was the first product that I had tried and truly do regret it. The Hefty OneZip Fresh Extend bags were the most reasonably priced but also did not provide the results that are intended for them to do.
