Guide to On-Campus Housing at Northern Kentucky University

Free Cable, Living on Campus, Northern Kentucky

Northern Kentucky University was once known as a purely commuter campus. While the vast majority of NKU students are still commuters, more and more students are living on campus. Each year residential life on campus grows. In fact, some students are being turned down for on-campus housing. NKU offers very nice and spacious dormitories compared to the average campus. Here is a look at all of the housing options Northern Kentucky University has to offer.

Commonwealth/Kentucky Halls. Commonwealth and Kentucky Halls are the only dorms at NKU that would be considered traditional on-campus housing. These dorms consist of traditional double occupancy bedrooms along with a group bathroom located on each floor. The dorms are co-ed, however each floor is either all male or all female. Also located within these halls is Cumberland, a separate wing that is just for honors students. The bottom floor of these halls has a kitchenette area and each room is furnished with two beds, two dressers, two closets, two desks with chairs, and a full length mirror.

Norse Hall. Norse Hall offers more apartment style living for on campus residents of NKU. The layout of each “suite” in Norse Hall includes two double occupancy bedrooms, a bathroom with toilet, sink, and shower, and living/dining area complete with a two burner stove, small refrigerator, sink, loveseat, a chair, and a dining table with four chairs. The bedrooms contain the same furnishings as the bedrooms in Commonwealth and Kentucky Halls. The entry to Norse Hall suites is from the outside, rather than from an interior corridor like most dorms.

University Suites. University Suites offers the newest accommodations on Northern Kentucky University’s campus. There are two bedroom apartments which are similar to Norse Hall except that there are actually two bathrooms, one for each two person bedroom. Instead of closets the bedrooms feature wardrobes, and there is only one dresser instead of two. The living room is not furnished in University Suites. Also located within University Suites are four bedroom apartments. These rooms are similar to the two bedroom option except that each person’s accommodation is separate. You have a very small bedroom and share two bathrooms located within the apartment, as well as the same kitchenette and living area.

Woodcrest Apartments. The final on-campus housing option for students at Northern Kentucky University is Woodcrest Apartments. These are true apartments and feature a few more amenities and a little more space than the other options on campus. There are one bedroom and three bedroom apartments, as well as a few efficiencies. The efficiencies are designed for one person and feature a single room that serves as your bedroom, kitchen, and living area, along with a separate private bathroom. The one bedroom apartment has accommodations for two residents with a bathroom and larger kitchen/living area. The kitchens are equipped with a full refrigerator, four burner stove, oven, and sink. The three bedroom apartments have three small bedrooms, each designed for one resident, and a common full kitchen/living area and bathroom. These apartments are the furthest away from the main campus.

Overall Northern Kentucky University offers dorm options for students that are far superior to other universities. With newer dorms, more suite and apartment options, free cable and internet, and air-conditioning, living on campus at NKU is an excellent choice for any student.
