In updating our kitchen appliances we chose the GE Profile Dishwasher. GE offers 400 appliances that all meet the Energy Star standards. So this will use less energy and less water. We pay for our water here in Florida so this is a big plus. The site tells you that if all Americans used the GE Energy Saver dishwasher enough water would be saved to fill 20,000 Olympic sized pools. Check the Energy Guide when you go to purchase an appliance. It wil show you the estimated amount of electricity the dishwasher uses during a year and compares the amount to that used by similar dishwasher models.
We purchased this at Best Buys along with all the other appliances we updated, a refrigerator, stove and microwave. We were very pleased with the service and selection at Best Buys as well as the prices. We paid $558.00 for this model . We also purchased a microwave the same day and because of this we were eligible for a $200 rebate which covered delivery and a 3 year warranty. We decided to add the warranty since we’d heard a few negative comments about repair issues on this model, so this was just a safety net. We had a minor problem with our refrigerator and the repairman mentioned GE is no longer making parts, they are importing them from China. We thought about cancelling our order but then the installation people gave us a better opinion of the GE line so we did some reviewing on line and decided to stick with our original decision, purchasing the GE but adding that warranty..
Some dishwashers are quieter than others. The amount of noise a dishwasher makes depends on the way it was designed and th amount of insulation around the tub and motor. Some dishwashers have a sanitary rinse to reduce germs. Some have crystal and china cycles. This model has both of those features. Pot scrubber features are important because they eliminate soaking an scrubbing. Also, look for high temperature washers if you want quicker drying time. Check the capacity of the racks and look for models with two or three spray arms with smaller holes on th arms so you get higher water pressure and better cleaning action. This model has two arms but we are only two people living here so that wasn’t an important issue for us. A water heater booster is an important feature. It will boost the dishwasher’s performance.
With this applliance it is recommended you use only tabs, liquid, powder or rinse agents, nothing that we hadn’t been doing forever. From reading some on line opinons we read the the liquid gave a very unstaisfactory result cleaning dishes so we will stick to the Electrasol Powder we’ve always used. The brands recommended were Electrasol and Cascade with Jet Dry. and or Crystal Clear Cascade. You have to stick with these brands since there is a warning that any other detergent will produce massive suds.The warning continues to describe massive suds on your kitchen floor spilling out of your dishwasher. You can bet I won’t break that rule.Your main wash control offers soft, medium soft and medium hard and your pre wash control gives you extremely hard.
With your instructions you get a water hardness test kit with test strips. This is to help you calibrate your dishwasher so it dispenses the optimal amount of detergent. This model features the Smart Dispense reservoir which holds an entire 45-oz. bottle of liquid dishwasher detergent, automatically dispensing just the right amount for every load and it will hold enough for a month. . Unfortunately, from the reviews I read it seems to be better to stick with regular everyday detergent dispensing so we aren’t using that feature.
The racks are adjustable and grey in color in this model.You can raise and lower the upper rack or remove it if you have extremely large items to wash in the bottom rack. The silverware rack has tops with openings that keep the silverware apart for better cleaning. These are removable. My model has the one piece basket, some have a three piece basket. The one piece basket can be placed on either side or in the front of the bottom rack. The bottom rack offers special large bowl tines to seperate large bowls, you can fold down two rows of flex lines if needed. This model does not come with a cutlery tray.Your upper rack can hold 10-12 place settings as can the lower rack depending on how you load them.
My model number ends with SS indicating stainless steel door. This can be kept clean with a dampened cloth Do not use scouring pads or powdered cleaners, they scratch. All my appliances are stainles steel and despite my concern about keeping them clean they have been no probem at all. THey also suggest a product called Stainless Steel Magic available through GE parts. 800 626 2002. Cleaning the control panel also just takes a damp cloth..
This model comes with a monthly dispenser meant for liquid detergent or the regular per use dispenser meant for powdered product.
This model has a really nice looking flat panel control set up. You have starter indicator lights, time remaining display and selections for desired wash program. It offers anti bacteria, normal, cookware (pots and pans which you can use for everyday dishes as well, china and crystal setting, glasses, plastic cycle with built in drying time, single rack wash for lightly soiled dishes and rinse only to take care of dishes being held until later washing. Do not use detergent when using this cycle.
Other enhancements are the option to use:
Delay Hours (up to 24 hrs) so you can set the dishwasher to run at night. There is added heat: This will give you a longer cycle with the heating element on to improve wash and dry performance.
Pre Wash for heavily soiled dishes or naked on foods. Use this PRIOR to starting a cycle.
Heated Dry: (Light Off) This shuts off the drying option and lets the dishes dry naturally
Heated Dry (Light On): This is anti bacterial. It runs 38 minutes for this.
The Added heat wash extends the total cycle 12 minutes. if you’re using the Normal cycle. It extends it 8 minutes on the Speed cycle.
The lock feature can be use to prevent any selections from being made.You can turn off any audibles from the end of cycle signal(or reactivate it).
For effective cleaning your water temperature should be 120 degrees to 150 degrees. You needn’t pre rinse your dishes though I continue to do this out of habit. They tell you to remove large quantities of food and hard soils so what’s the difference.I’m already doing the scraping so I do a little prerinse as well. My dishes are coming out nice and clean, no spotting on my glasses or silverware so I’m quite pleased with this model and with GE.
