What is Redwork Embroidery?

Redwork embroidery is what is known as using red embroidery thread only for making these designs on fabrics. The redwork embroidery uses a few basic embroidery techniques for outlining the designs.

Most often a muslin fabric is used for embroidering these designs onto. The reason for that is because the muslin is thin enough to see through for tracing the patterns onto the muslin. If you have a lightweight or thin fabric other than muslin, you could use that instead of muslin for making a quilt with the redwork quilt patterns.

What types of Stitches are used for Redwork Embroidery?

There are two types of stitches that are most commonly used for outlining the redwork embroidery projects. The two types of redwork stitches are Stem Stitch and Outline Stitch.

On occasion a Satin Stitch was used to fill in small areas. For example, this type of stitches could have been used for the eyes or centers of flowers.

Two other types of stitches uses are the Backstitch or the split stitch. These two types of embroidery stitches are used for tight curves in a embroidery design.

Can Other Single Colors Be Used Instead of Red for This Type of Embroidery?

Yes, you can use another single color besides red to create a color work embroidery design. You can use green, blue, black or any other solid color. The name of the color work will change to the name of the color of embroidery thread being used. For example, if you are using green, the name will be come greenwork.
