Reading has been a challenge for many. The comprehension for reading has become even a problem among most adults. This challenge is becoming a nationwide problem. Reading needs to be addressed in the early stages of childhood. The sooner the reading comprehension problems are dressed, the better.
This article will express six games to help children and adults to improve their reading skills. Games were created to help all aspects of learning difficulties. Games give learning a more fun and interesting twist.
Game #1: Bingo is a classic game enjoyed by thousands. Bingo has been used in many different variations. Blank game cards can either be printed off the internet or created yourself. The object of this version is to choose simple words for each letter of the word, bingo. Instead of numbers use simple words, such as where, when, why or how. Whoever has a “bingo,” wins the game. The winning prize can be anything of your choosing.
Game #2: A misspelled word game will help to improve the quality of the child or an adult’s reading. The instructor who is giving the game can create a list of misspelled words. The child or children who is playing the game will try to find the correct spelling. The winner of the game can win a prize. A misspelled word will help those with poor reading skills to recognize the spelling.
Game #3: Reading skills have become widely popular among teachers and parents. A list of words from a children’s book that is currently being read, should be created. How will this assist in improving the skills of reading? It is quite simple. For example, if the book, “The Three little pigs,” is the chosen book. A list of words such as pigs, wolf and house should be given to the child before the book is read. Every night the child or children should practice the list of words. At the end of the reading, a test should be given on spelling and other variations. A daily quiz can be given to further enrich their skills.
Game #4: Most children or adults who are having trouble reading, may be having trouble with common letters. Common letters are apart of the basic reading foundation. A fun game or lesson to remember letters is to have the student trace the letters onto someone’s back. The person who is being traced on, needs to pay close attention and guess the letter being traced. The tracing should be done with a finger.
Another activity to try is to have the student create collages representing that particular letter. For example, a collage of the letter S. The collage needs to include items such as stars, starburst, or star horses. Anything beginning with the letter S.
Game #5: Repeated readings may seem boring to children. But with their favorite story will help to encourage future reading. The child’s favorite book needs to be read to the child. It is then asked of the child to take the book home with them to read to another adult. A paper needs to be signed to prove the book was read out loud. This should be conducted for two or three days or till their reading improves. A unique twist to this lesson is to watch the movie of the book.
Game #6: Vocabulary is a big part of reading. Without vocabulary reading is not possible. A game to improve vocabulary is to choose a book to read. Before the book is read, a list of words needs to be created. The words will be located in the stories contents. The child who finds the most vocabulary words wins.
These six games are free and will help to improve their reading skills. Learning should be fun and exciting. Children who are having difficulty learning tend to learn more, if it is fun. Be creative and adventurous.
