Spring will soon be upon us and with all this wonderful weather you are probably looking for fun activities to do with your family. Houston has a wide variety of family friendly activities to keep everyone entertained. You are flat broke? Don’t despair! These fun and FREE family activities will give you and your family hours of entertainment!

Houston Zoo

The zoo is a great place to entertain children of all ages. The Houston Zoo offers several options for free admission. Are you on the Texas SNAP program or an active duty military member? If you are, you get in for free! Admission is also free for everyone the first Tuesday of every month from 2pm to close.

The Children’s Museum

The Children’s Museum is a great place to take your kids if you are looking for educational entertainment. Every Thursday is Family Free Night from 5pm to 8pm. Children of all ages can take part in various exhibits and activities all while learning something new for free! This is a great option on those rainy spring days.

Miller Outdoor Theater

The Miller Outdoor Theater is the only theater of its kind that offers free performances of a wide variety of entertaining and culturally diverse shows. Relax on the lawn and have a picnic or reserve seats in the covered seating area. The season runs from March to November. All the performances are free and offer a wide variety of shows to suit all ages and tastes.

Hermann Park

There are so many things to do at Hermann Park that you are sure to have plenty of free options for the whole family. Get your exercise by enjoying the walking trails. Children will enjoy the various playgrounds, catch and release fishing at Bob’s Fishing Pier and the interactive water playground. Enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the many picnic areas, enjoy some quiet time at the reflection pond or take in the beauty of nature at The Japanese Gardens.

Discovery Green

Discovery Green is open from 6am to 11pm and offers a wide variety of fun and free options for both adults and children. Every fall and spring season enjoy music concerts from local bands on Thursdays and Sundays. Watch a family friendly movie with IKEA Houston’s Screen on the Green. Looking to get fit for free? Take part in Free Fitness in the Park during the spring and fall seasons to get a work out with Yoga, Pilates and Zumba. If you have young children, their Toddler Tuesday series, currently being held from March 15th to April 26th from 10:30 – 11:30am, offers fun toddler friendly activities.

Bear Creek Park

Bear Creek Park has a wide variety of fun things to do year round. In addition to the various picnic and playground areas, the park also has a two mile jogging trail, golf course, tennis courts and baseball and soccer fields. A rare perk of the park is the animal exhibits that are featured. Get an up close and personal view of animals such as bison, emu, ostrich and deer, as well as birds such as macaws and peacocks. At no admission charge, this park is definitely a great place to go for inexpensive family fun.

Sea Center Texas

For those who are willing to drive a little out of the way, Sea Center Texas is a great addition to your free family fun. Located in Lake Jackson, 50 miles outside of Houston, Sea Center Texas has a variety of different exhibits all focusing on marine life. Take advantage of the various aquariums and touch tank. The facility features an outdoor wetland exhibit, a youth fishing pond and the largest redfish hatchery in the world. The center offers great educational fun for all the family at no admission cost.
