Although they almost always cross genre, there are two kinds of zombie flicks: serious and funny. Fans of zombie films love both, but the humorous ones are generally the most entertaining and have the highest watch ability factor (sorry fellow Romero fans). 1- Dead Alive. Also known as Braindead (depending on the country), this is an early film from acclaimed director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings). A nice young mans life is twisted apart after his mother is bitten by a rat-monkey creature and awakens a zombie. He attempts to care for her but the disease spreads and zombie mayhem runs wild with disgustingly funny gag effects mixed with over the top amounts of blood with the help of a lawn mower. 2 – Fido. A very original film that is set in the cliché 1950’s world of “father knows best”, and “keeping up with the Joneses”. The movie takes place after a zombie apocalypse where a government organization has enslaved the undead into being personal servants. Complete with cheesy news reel footage and instructional clips this movie cleverly mixes the wholesome with the dead. 3 – Shaun of the Dead. This is a hilarious British comedy featuring the great duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. As Simon Pegg’s character is facing issues with his relationships and future, a zombie plague hits. He is then forced to man up and lead a eccentric pack of friends and family toward safety in his favorite pub. The adventure is filled with a great cast, witty humor, and goofy physical gags. 4- Slither – Though not entirely a zombie flick, this movie does contain many zombies that are controlled by slug like aliens…or alien? From first time director and screenwriter James Gunn (Dawn of the Dead remake) this film blends many horror elements into a unique story. A small group of people attempt to survive and figure out the mystery of a small town turned zombie after a plague of slug like creatures jump down the throats of the inhabitants. There is lots of humor presented in a intentional but not too obvious way recalling 80’s horror comedies. 5 – Zombieland – This movie features all the best elements of the horror comedy: quick scares, gore, fast and funny lines, cool ridiculous weapon weilding monster kills, a neurotic virgin, an over the top tough guy, a sexy bad girl, a cute and too smart for her own good little girl, and Bill Murray as Bill Murray. This movie takes all the typical elements of a zombie apocalypse and mixes in satirical, ironic, and physical comedy with the idea of what would really happen in this scenario.
