First Person: How to Buy a Retired U-Haul Truck

If you find yourself in need of renting a U-Haul or any other moving truck on a regular basis, you should consider the possibility of purchasing a retired U-Haul moving truck. Every month, many of the older and higher mileage trucks are removed from the rental fleet and taken to area garage centers where they are stripped of all corporate markings and evaluated and repaired for functionality prior to being dispatched back to area dealerships and put up for sale to the public.

Searching for the Ideal Truck

There are a couple easy ways to search for your ideal U-Haul truck to purchase. The first method is to visit the corporate website and follow the link to purchase a truck. From here you can search for dealerships in your area that currently have trucks available for sale on their lots. Each listing has the basic information on the truck and a couple pictures of its condition, along with the asking price for that truck. The second method is to drive to your local dealerships and see that they have parked in their lots. Sometimes website is not updated as quickly as inventory changes so this is a great way to buy a truck on demand. You can even call U-Haul National Truck Sales office in Arizona and they can tell you what trucks are in your area and possibly tell you about trucks that are getting ready to make their way to the sales floor in the coming month.

The Test Drive

Much as you would do for any vehicle purchase, you are invited by U-Haul to take their sales trucks for a test drive prior to discussing a purchase. Simply stop by a local dealer and ask them for a test drive of the truck and they will set you up. As you drive the truck make sure all of the elements function properly and make notes of any potential issues and repairs that you will need to make prior to putting the truck into use for yourself. Also make sure to walk around the truck and check inside the box to verify any excess damage or related issues to the truck. Once you found the truck you want, it is time to make an offer.
