Family Volunteer Opportunities in Orlando

Volunteer Opportunities

I was raised to believe that volunteer opportunities cleanse the soul and better the environment. If you live in the Orlando area and are interested in making your city a better place, lots of organizations need your help. From cleaning cages at the animal shelters to serving food at soup kitchens, your hard work can make life better for someone else.

SPCA of Central Florida

The local humane society in Orlando needs your help. They have several different volunteer opportunities depending on your skills and comfort level, and they are always looking for new helpers. Bark buddies spend time with the dogs, for example, throwing balls, teaching basic commands, and cleaning cages. Office helpers assist with the administrative aspects of running the center, while foster families take in homeless animals until they can be placed.

They also have a Pet Visit Program where people with their own pets visit sick children, elderly patients, and others in the community. All that is required for SPCA volunteer opportunities is a commitment to eight hours or more per month. Some positions require at least three hours at a time.

Cornerstone Hospice

Volunteer opportunities at Cornerstone Hospice in Orlando range from clerical duties to lawn maintenance, to family assistance. Some volunteers contribute four hours or more per week to patients and their families, running errands, preparing meals, and spending time. The Hospice requires a one-year commitment for interested volunteers.

There are opportunities for both adults and youths who want to make their patients’ lives a little bit easier. There is a complex training program involved, but you’ll learn about what it takes to be a volunteer and you’ll be better prepared to deal with any situation you encounter. Some of the patients at the hospice are elderly, while others are young, and many suffer from terminal illness.

The purpose of the Community Food and Outreach Center in Orlando is to provide food, support, and crisis services to families in need. They have volunteer opportunities in several areas of operation, including stocking food, assisting people in need, coordinating food drives, and more. Both teens and adults are encouraged to donate their time.

The Center is open Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and they need volunteers during all business hours. Volunteers submit an application and attend an orientation to prepare them for whatever assistance they will provide. Some positions involve working hands-on with the people the Center helps, while others are more for behind-the-scenes jobs.

First Book

I know that I took books for granted as a child, but some kids don’t have access to a never-ending supply of reading material – or any at all. First Book in Orlando is an organization that provides books to school ‘” age children. Their goal is to promote literacy and to help children create futures for themselves.

There are volunteer opportunities available through First Book, most of which involve helping the organization deliver books to children in need.
