The Athens YMCA is offering interesting summer camp options for children looking to do more than just play video games and watch TV this summer. A Christian based organization, the YMCA aims for these summer camps to build a solid Christian foundation in children so they will in turn become better students during the school year. Most of these summer camps are for both boys and girls, with a few camps being gender exclusive.
X-tremist Summer Camp
The X-tremist summer camp is for children who seek outdoor adventure pleasures away from the typical outdoor camping and hiking activities. These one week summer camps offer more exciting activities like rock climbing, white-water rafting, and caving. Children, from ages 12 to 14, train and participate in these activities, based on their age and skill level.
Campers experience other outdoor activities during these summer camps as well including mountain biking and backpacking trips. These two activities involves campers riding through some of the mountain trails of North Georgia, backpacking at times along the way. Campers may hike as far Tennessee.
There is also an advanced X-tremiist summer camp for boys, ages 13-15. These summer camps include the activities of the first x-tremist camps but on a more intense scale. These are two week summer camps where outdoor survival is the main focus. Campers learn to live and survive in outdoor environments including taking a two to three night backing mountain trip and preparing and eating some of their meals from the land.
Both summer camps have campers live in log cabins and eat in dining halls, but there are a few other differences. The prices for these summer camps vary, with the X-tremist session being $660 per week and the advanced X-tremist session being at $1460 for two weeks. The dates vary as well with the first X-tremist session starting on June 14 and the advanced X-tremist session starting on June 7.
Wrangler’s Summer Camp
The Wrangler’s summer camp is an equestrian camp for girls, ages 12-15, who have a strong love for horses. With a Western style theme, this summer camp uses care giving of horses as a way to teach girls about themselves and relationships with others.
During these summer camps, each camper will be assigned to one horse, in which they will feed, saddle, and take responsibility for other care giving activities for their assigned horse. Campers will also have overnight trail riding experiences with these horses. Classes are taught as well by equestrian experts.
Of course, room and board are necessary features, with campers living in log cabins and eating in dining halls.
These summer camps are two week sessions, with the first camp beginning July 5. The cost for each session is $1500.
Servant Leader Training Summer Camp
The Servant Leader Training summer camps offers boys, ages 14-15, the opportunity to learn leadership skills from great leaders of the past and present, with the most notable being the life of Jesus Christ. These summer camps teach these traits by having campers learning in peer leading and technical skill classes and participating in various service projects and volunteer programs. Other fun activities are involved as well, including paintball and white water rafting.
There two opportunities to participate in these two sessions, with the first session beginning June 14 and the second session starting July 5. The fee for each session is $1200.
Leader in Training Summer Camp
The Leader in Training summer camp considers to be the upper level of the Servant Leader session. The Leader in Training sessions last a month and train campers to learn more about themselves in relation to great leaders and the world, in general. During these camps, participants take mentoring, public speaking, and decision-making classes.
These campers exhibit what they learn through various mentoring opportunities with other simultaneous summer camps and community service projects. For campers who finish these training programs lies the opportunity to come back the following year as a staff member.
These camps are not all work with the including of many fun activities. White water rafting and hiking along with attending Atlanta Braves games and amusement parks are available to campers as well.
There are two sessions running this summer, with the first session starting on June 7 and the second on July 5. The fee for each session is $1250.
For each summer camp, campers will dwell and eat in the log cabins and the dining hall on the property. An Infirmary resides on the property as well.
