ESPN Inside Access: Tyson DVD Review

Don King, Mike Tyson

This is another release of Mike Tyson by ESPN in 2008. This is very different then there previous release of Ringside with Tyson. Inside Access is more biography then Ringside. Inside Access has less interviews then Ringside but there more detailed. Inside Access has less fights with six while Ringside has nineteen. There are four parts of Inside Access. They are Sportscentury, ESPN Features, Conversations, and In The Ring.

Sportscentury- This is the biography of Mike Tyson thats an hour long. It shows Mike’s rough upbringing as a child. His path of crime related incidents and dropping out of school. How he found his way into boxing. They show his rise in the heavyweight division to his downfall. His relationships with Cus Demato and Jim Jacobs. The after effects of there deaths on Tyson. His troubled marriage with Robin Givens. How Don King’s influence on Tyson costed him his chance of being the greatest boxer of all time. The rape trial which sent Mike to prison for three and a half years. His lost to Evander Holyfield that set up a controversial rematch were Tyson bit Evander’s ear off. The Boxing commission stripping his license to fight. Then to his fight with Lennox Lewis where he got hammered and knocked out. His retirement until his tax woes brought him back to the ring which he lost to journeymen.

ESPN Features

2002 Outside The Lines- This is about the prehype and events before the Lewis fight. This led to Tyson’s trainer parting ways with him. Then ESPN interviews people who knows what Tyson is like to understand his actions.

2007 E:60- This is when Jeremy Schapp interviews Tyson about the past and present. Tyson talks about his fights in in his prime. What he’s being doing now to make money and live life. His thoughts about boxing as of right now.

Conversations- These are interviews of Mike Tyson between 1986 and 2002. All but one interview were featured in Ringside. There are seven interviews here while Ringside had ten. The same interviews that are in Ringside are much more in length in Access. From the interviews Tyson talks about his childhood, life, boxing, family, the media, his video game, his influence on young boxers, and fans. This is great stuff from Tyson and he’s very truthful in each of his interviews.

In The Ring- These are his six fights which often considered his biggest fights.

Mike Tyson vs Hector Mercedes- His first professional fight
Mike Tyson vs Jesse Ferguson- His first primetime fight
Mike Tyson vs Trevor Burbick – His first championship fight
Mike Tyson vs Larry Holmes- His first fight with a legend
Mike Tyson vs Micheal Spinks- His demolition and destruction on a future legend
Mike Tyson vs Buster Douglass- His first loss

The only cons of the dvd is that in the interviews with Mike there edited. I wish they could of shown each interview full length. Another setback is that the fights they have shown they skip rounds. They could of kept these rounds and put on more fights.

Overall this is a great dvd for Tyson fans to have if there interested in his biography. The biography and interviews alone is worth the price to get. This is a great edition to Ringside which was released two years before. It also raises the question had Mike not allowed Don King in his circle, would he have been one of the greatest fighters of all time?
