Now that environmental awareness is in the international foreground, keeping your car’s emissions clean is a big issue. Georgia’s Clean Air Force (GCAF) is the state’s Enhanced Vehicle Emission Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) Program, and they have been working on cleaning up Georgia’s air since 1996. To date, they have identified and repaired over 1.5 million heavy polluting vehicles, and in order to help you help them, this article will outline the emissions guidelines in the state of Georgia.
All 1996 and newer vehicles will receive a two-part inspection which includes an OBD test to check your vehicle’s emission control performance history and a fuel cap inspection to check for adequate seal. If an OBD test cannot be performed, then it might be necessary to perform a Two-Speed Idle test, or TSI. All 1995 and older model year vehicles will receive a four-part inspection which includes an inspection of the catalytic converter to check for tampering or removal, an Accelerated Simulation Mode Test – a dual-mode test including a 25/25 test (25% load at 25 mph) and a 50/15 test = (50% load at 15 mph), a tailpipe exhaust emission test, and a fuel cap inspection to check for adequate seal.
An inspector can reject a vehicle for testing if it is considered unsafe to test, so make sure you keep your car up to standards, and test at least three weeks before your tag needs to be renewed so you can fix any problems which might be found during inspection. Some of the most common reasons for emission test failures include a malfunction in the components of the vehicle that regulate the fuel/air ratio (e.g. the oxygen sensor and the EGR valve). a dirty air filter, malfunctioning spark plugs, etc. Many of these things can be checked and repaired during regularly scheduled tune-ups. If the test has already begun when the safety problem is detected, the inspector can charge the full price of the test, so make sure your car meets the safety standards by going through the following checkpoints to make sure your car is good to go.
- Have your oil changed regularly.
- Make sure your fuel cap fits snugly on the fuel tank.
- Keep your fuel cap sealer clean and in good condition.
- Keep your tires adequately inflated.
- Check your belts and hoses for wear and tear.
- Make sure your transmission is in good shape, as a transmission problem is related to the emission control system. Transmission malfunctions can stop a vehicle from running efficiently, and that increases emissions above federal certification limits.
- Before you repair your car, make sure you research any recalls or technical service bulletins (TSBs), and also manufacturer warranties pertaining to your emission control system.

While emissions testing is an involved process, it’s proved to be advantageous to helping the smog level in Atlanta and the surrounding area. Pretty soon, emissions testing will be required throughout the entire state. So if you’re in the counties listed above, or even if you’re not, be sure to do us all a favor and keep your car and, ultimately, yourself more healthy by taking your car in for testing at least once a year.
