What would you say if I told you that these were the end times? I know, sounds a little extreme. But think about it. So many things are happening in the world right now that are of epic proportions. Does this mean we should start packing away survival kits in secret hidden shelters? Should we be purchasing fresh drinking water by the gallons? Should we be stashing away mounds of cash in the event of a world wide financial crisis? Maybe.
We can start with just the United States. Out west we have, or had, wild fires that uncontrollably devoured countless acres of land. Homes were destroyed. Lives were lost. People’s lives have been changed forever. At one point, it seemed as if the fires may not be controllable. They swept over one of the most densely populated areas of our country and took no prisoners.
In the south, mainly states like Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, we have a battle over life’s ultimate necessity–water. A massive drought has stricken the southern states causing the area to be proclaimed in a state of emergency by the federal government. The reprecautions of this drought could affect the south in innumerable ways. The drought has become so severe that the Governor of Georgia, Sonny Perdue, has coordinated a prayer service. According to Perdue, the prayer service is to seek a remedy for the drastic drought.
“The only solution is rain, and the only place we get that is from a higher power.”
Just 2 years ago, another area in the south suffered the antithesis of Georgia’s current woes. Hurricane Katrina blasted the southern coastal regions, namely the coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi. According to a Wiki article on the storm, nearly 80% of one of the United States’ most beloved and historical cities, New Orleans, was flooded. Death, destruction and displacement followed the raging winds and waters. Two years later, the area has not fully recovered and expects a significant amount of time to pass before the area is restored.
Events of Biblical proportions occur outside of the States as well. All eyes look intently on the daily occurrences in the Middle East. We have become numb to headlines of suicide bombers, deceased soldiers, and talks of nuclear warfare. While the content of the stories is of utmost importance to Americans, and for the matter all humans, we’re getting to the point where so much of what we hear is opinion based jargon entirely based on financial agendas.
I have a feeling that more people in this country would recognize Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the man that doesn’t think homosexuals exist in his country rather than the man that controls Iran (and its nuclear authority against Israel and God knows who else).
I’m sure that some would look at these events and declare “The sky is falling.” Others may see these events as a result of global warming or some other manmade disservice to the environment. It’s hard to decide if these events are linked together in some form of a cosmic warning. And historians may be quick to point out that the world is no stranger to globally catastrophic events, both by Acts of God or manmade. Either way, Hollywood couldn’t write these catastrophes. Well, at least not right now.
