DIY Wedding Cake Card Holder

Bird Cages, Card Holder

Are you trying to find ways to save money on your upcoming wedding? Many weddings have a card holder where guests can deposit their wedding cards to the couple. Popular card holders include bird cages or chests with prices typically ranging from $30 to $100. Creating your own wedding card holder is fun, easy, and will save you money! A simple wedding card holder design is the shape of a wedding cake. You can choose to decorate your “cake” to mimic your own wedding cake or design it completely different. The following instructions will guide you to make a three-tiered round card holder.

Required Tools:
-Three round hat boxes (Each one should be increasingly larger than the next. You can also use square boxes.)
-White spray paint
-Hot glue gun
-Utility knife
-Fake flowers (or decorations of your choosing)

Step 1: Determine the size and shape of the card holder. It is best for the cake card holder to have at least three tiers.

Step 2: Purchase (or use boxes that you already have) three hat boxes in increasingly larger sizes. Lay out the boxes on top of one another to check the sizes. *Make sure that the bottom box has a lid that can be removed so that you can take out the wedding cards!

Step 3: Top Box. Using the utility knife, cut a rectangular opening in the top box. This is where guests will drop their wedding cards so make sure that the opening is large enough for a variety of card shapes and sizes. Cut a larger rectangular opening in the bottom of the top box. This is so that the cards will drop down.

Step 4: Middle Box. Using the utility knife, cut a rectangular opening large enough on the top of the middle box so that the cards can drop through from above. *Make sure that the top box will cover this rectangular opening. Cut a larger rectangular opening in the bottom of the middle box. This is so that the cards will continue to drop down.

Step 5:Bottom Box. Using the utility knife, cut a rectangular opening large enough in the top of the bottom box so that the cards can drop all the way through and rest in the bottom box. *Make sure that the middle box will cover this rectangular opening.

Step 6: Spray paint the boxes white with two to three coats of paint. If you like, you may choose to cover the boxes with fabric or paper in any color or texture.

Step 7: Once the boxes are dry, hot glue them one on top of the other. Glue wedding decorations to the cake. Be creative with the design! You can make your card holder a traditional white or silly and fun with bold colors. If you choose, create a small sign for your guests that reads “Please place loose envelopes in slot at top of cake.”
