DIY Project: Family Photo Coffee Table

Family Craft, Family Photos

This Family Photo Coffee Table is perfect for furnishing your home. This simple family photo coffee table would look great in a family room, living room, or even a home office.

You can make it for your own home over the weekend. Working with wood and MDF can sound a little intimidating, but you will be pleasantly surprised how easy it really is!

To make this Family Photo coffee table you will need to spread it out over a couple days, so working over the weekend will probably work best. While you won’t be working on the craft project all day long, you do need to allow for time for materials to dry.

Be sure to buy your glass table top first and built your Family Photo coffee table to fit it. This will save you a lot of time and money!

To Make a Family Photo Coffee Table You Will Need:

4 sheets of plywood or MDF cut to the same size

8 L brackets

Primer

Photocopies of family photos

Paintbrushes

Go through all of your family photos. You can take them to Kink’s and have them all photo copied in color of black and white so that you do not have to damage the originals. You can also easily resize them into any size you want!

After you get your family photos copied use scissors or pinking sheers to cut them out.

Now, on to building the coffee table. The first step is to measure your piece of glass tabletop. Everyone will have a different size, so I can only give you tips on how to know how large to make your Family Photo Coffee Table.

Make it slightly smaller than the glass tabletop. Now, measure how wide the tabletop is. If you have a circle tabletop, then mark out a square on it with painter’s tape. Measure this to get the dimensions for your tile table base.

Have your 4 pieces of MDF cut to size. A good height for a coffee table is 2.5 feet tall. You can make the square to fit your tabletop.

Now, the first step is to primer the front and back of your sheet of MDF or plywood. Let this dry, and then paint on a coat of paint in any color you wish.

The front of the Family Photo Coffee Table will be covered in tile, but the back (or inside) will be visible. You will want to paint this side of each piece. You could also cover it in photos as well. You will need a lot more photos though!

Install L brackets to hold the four pieces together in a square. Install an L bracket at the top and bottom of each corner. The mosaics should be on the outside.

Now, take your decoupage medium and start painting some on the back of a family photograph. Paint some on the coffee table as well. Press the family photo into place.

Continue this process until you have covered the entire base of the coffee table in family photos.

The decoupage medium will dry clear; so don’t worry about it going on white.

Once the decoupage has dried you are finished. Stand the Family Photo Coffee Table up and place your piece of round or square beveled glass on top.
