DIY: Build Your Own Modular Furniture – Wardrobe

Woodworking Tools

By stacking different pieces of modular furniture together, you can create any design you choose to match the space or décor of your room. This is especially helpful with limited spaces such as studio apartments, RV’s or dorm rooms. One great advantage of building your own

This wardrobe is freestanding and made for shirts, skirts or folded over pants. Make two wardrobes and hang dresses, long coats and whatever you like. Add shelves for even greater storage.

This article assumes the builder has basic woodworking skills. This is a great project to learn from.

The measurements of the modular furniture are based on 15″ lengths. You can change this for your particular needs.

You will need:

  • · Two sheets ¾” furniture grade plywood
  • ·(s)
  • · One furring strip, 8 feet long
  • · Plywood edging tape

Step One:

Cut one top and bottom piece, each 15″ by 24″. This depth mimics most floor cabinet depths, and will allow most clothes hangers to fit comfortably.

Cut two side pieces, each 24″ wide by 58.5″ tall.

Attach the top and bottom pieces with butt joints. The side pieces will be inside the joint.

Step Two:

Measure across the back and cut a piece of MDF to fit. Attach with the ¾” screws. Drill pilot holes first to avoid splitting the MDF.

Step Three:

Decide if you want one door or two for your wardrobe. Measure across the front and cut the door(s).

Step Four:

Center the closet rod inside the wardrobe, ten inches down from the top. Attach the rod using the supplied screws and hardware.

Measure across the back of the inside wardrobe and subtract two inches. Measure the sides and do the same.

Cut three pieces of furring strip and attach at the back and the sides. Ensure the pieces are level.

Cut a shelf to fit over the furring strips.

Step Five:

Attach the door(s) with the cabinet hinges. To help the door(s) stay closed, attach cabinet catches or a magnetic latch inside the top and bottom or at the side of the door.

Step Six:

If a bottom shelf is desired, create one or more by using the same steps as in step four.

Step Seven:

Sand and stain the inside and the outside of the wardrobe. Attach the door pull(s) to the front of the wardrobe door(s).

If desired, install two closet rods for skirts, pants and shirts. Create two wardrobes for both long and short clothes. This increases the usable storage space.

Notes:

  • ·. Make shelves between them for an entertainment, or study area.

By making different modular pieces for your room or closet, you can maximize your storage space at a fraction of the cost.
