Different Types of Betta Fish

Betta Care, Betta Fish, Betta Splendens, Bettas, Fighting Fish

There are a lot of different kinds of Betta fish with a wide variety of colors and tail shapes. The most common Bettas are Betta Splendens, as well as Betta Bellica.

Kinds of Bettas – Betta Splendens
These Bettas are from the coast of Thailand, grow to an estimated three inches, and typically survive around three years. They’re extremely combatitive with other male Betta fish and have even been known to hurt their young.

Species of Betta Fish – Betta Bellica – Malaysian Fighting Fish
Betta Bellica originally arrived from the shores of Malaysia and are not the same in looks from the Japanese fighting fish. They have smaller fins with a heart shaped back fin. They are easily the thickest of any other Bettas. The male of this species is a lot longer and more colorful than the female of the species. In nature, Malaysian Fighting Fish sleep on top of large leaves on top of the water. When eating, you may frequently observe the Betta Bellica leap out of the water to feed.

Betta Coccina
Betta Coccina are from Sumatra and is one of the littlest kinds of Bettas. They are typically reddish brown and can frequently display a spot on their rear. The coolest indicator of the Betta Coccina is their vivid blue eyes. Both the male and female are very skinny and are about the same height.

Betta Picta – Javanese Fighting Fish
Javanese Fighting Fish are minimally aggressive Bettas, and are not hard to reproduce. They also aren’t as beautifully pigmented as other Betta species, and are therefore also not really seen often in pet stores. With this type of Betta, the female Bettas occassionally fight over the male of the species so it is best to keep them separated if you notice this happening. Betta Coloration
In their natural habitat, betta fish normally only display bright pigmentation when angry and female bettas normally have less sharp pigmentation than male bettas. However, bettas breeders have had success in creating strong coloration permanent for both the male and female all the time, not just when upset. Some of the colors that are available in several kinds of betta fish include virtually every color. There are solid colored betta fish, and some types of bettas are even bi-colored.

Betta Tails
Besides the wide range of colors of betta fish, there are also a wide range of types of betta tails. The most common, and inexpensive is the Veil tail. The Halfmoon Betta fish is rarest and easily the most expensive. The halfmoon Betta’s tail fin spreads out into a complete half circle, and is incredible to look at.

There are a large number of other tails – the delta, super delta, fan, round, spade, double as well as the crown.
