Do you have an old round tin can lying around the house? Turn it into a winter themed pencil holder! Not only will you have created something useful, but you will be recycling this tin can as well!

Here are the materials, directions, and a few ideas for designing your own winter pencil holder. Any children working on this craft should have the help and supervision of a trusted adult. If you have never done this craft before, then you should read through all of the directions and ideas before starting on the pencil holder.

Note: The colors you use are up to you. But if you want to use winter themed colors, then white, blue, and silver may be best. The supplies you use for this craft will depend on your preference.

Materials:

Round Tin Can.
Paint.
Paint Brushes.
Ribbon.
Construction Paper.
Scissors.
Glue.
Scotch Tape.
Winter Themed Beads or Charms.
Winter Themed Stickers.
Glitter.
Old Newspaper.

Directions:

1. First you want to decorate the first layer of the can. There are two ways to do it:

A. Carefully paint the entire can the color of your choice. Be sure to let it dry completely before you continue working on the tin can. Touching the tin can while the paint is still wet can cause a mess. Make sure you have old newspaper under it, incase the paint drips.

B. If you do not want paint the entire tin can, the pick out a piece construction paper in the color of your choice. Measure and cut the paper so that it fits the size of the tin can. You may need one or two sheets of construction paper, depending on the size of the can. Glue the construction paper to the outside of the tin can. Use enough glue to hold the construction paper, but do not soak it in glue. Doing so could cause problems with further decorating your tin can.

If you do not want to use glue, then an alternative would be scotch tape.

2. When the glue or paint is completely dry, you can being designing the pencil holder. If you are painting a design or pattern on it, then you should do that first. When you are done, let it completely dry.

When the paint is completely dry (or if you are choosing not to use paint), you can decorate with winter themed stickers. Another option is to draw and cut out winter graphics from construction paper.

You can do one of these options, or all of them!

Winter themed stickers and cutouts include snowflakes, snowmen, icicles, snow covered trees and buildings, penguins, and polar bears.

If you are gluing any cutouts onto the pencil holder, then be sure to let the glue completely dry.

3. Once your glue and paint is dry, you can decorate with a little glitter if you want. This can be done with glitter glue or by putting a little glue onto your pencil holder and sprinkling glitter over it. You can come up with a new design or make an existing one sparkle. Let the glitter and glue dry.

4. Once everything is done, you can add the finishing touches to your pencil holder. Measure and cut a piece of winter colored ribbon. Tie it around the top of the tin can. Slip on a few winter beads or charms if you would like. This is optional, but can look really nice.

So while it may take a little time, designing your own winter pencil holder is actually pretty easy. You have creative control of this craft, so you can skip any decorating step you want to.
