Decorating with Curtains

Accent Wall

Curtains are great for dressing up windows but there is so much more you can do with them. Curtains can be used to divide a room or provide a temporary wall when you need one. Curtains can be used as a door to close off a closet, cabinet or hallway. You can hang curtains on a canopy bed frame or from the ceiling to create an exotic, tent-like effect around your bed. You can also cover an entire wall with curtains to provide a colorful, textured background or hide damage or flaws on the wall.

Use curtains as a room divider.

A curtain room divider can come in handy in a studio apartment or other type of rental home where installing a real wall isn’t feasible. Several options exist for installing curtains across a room or large space. One method would involve installing a wire or cable from one wall to the other. Wire rope clips can be used to secure loops on each end of the wire, which can then be hung from hooks installed on the wall. Turnbuckles can be added at each end to provide tension in the wire. Ceiling mount curtain rods or a ceiling mount curtain track are other options for hanging curtains across the room.

Use curtains as a door.

Some types of storage closets such as linen closets or even bedroom closets don’t have built-in doors. Hanging a curtain where a door would normally be is a quick and easy solution to hiding whatever is being stored in that space. The curtain rod can be installed on the inside of the closet, on the outside or on the ceiling. Depending on the width of the door, you can hang a single panel or two panels. Use tiebacks to keep the curtains pulled out of the way when using the closet or as a decorative effect. You can also use curtains to frame a doorway leading into a walk-in closet or hallway. Beaded curtains are commonly used in doorways.

Use curtains as a canopy.

If your daughter suddenly decides she wants a canopy bed and you can’t afford to buy a new bed, ceiling mount curtain rods can come to the rescue. Install one at the head of the bed and one on each side of the bed. Add some sheer curtain panels in her favorite color and voila! Your little princess will have her canopy bed. This is also a great idea for a romantic master bedroom. Sheer curtain panels look elegant but you can choose any type of fabric.

Cover a wall with curtains.

Curtains can be used to create a colorful and textured accent wall. You can try this idea in the bedroom behind your bed, in the living room behind the sofa or along one of the walls in the dining room. Make sure you have plenty of extra fabric so that the curtains hang with elegant folds. Any type of fabric can be used but the fabric should fit in with the design of the room. For example, luxury fabrics should be used in the dining room, as it is typically more of a formal type setting. This could include satin, velvet or a metallic fabric which is actually made from tiny, individual links of aluminum, stainless steel or brass. A beaded curtain would make a beautiful accent wall behind the bed or behind the sofa. The best part of a curtain accent wall is how quickly and easily it can be changed for a whole new look!
