Creative Ways to Use a Sofa Table in a Great Room

Furnishing, Sofa

A sofa table is not an item that everyone chooses or uses when furnishing a great room. Many people simply do not know how or where to use one. The shape is generally rectangular, and it is about the height of a dining table and the length of a coffee table. It offers many practical and stylish arrangement possibilities. A sofa table is meant to sit in back of a sofa, but it has many creative uses beyond a simple accessory.

I have a sofa table that I purchased when I lived in a larger home. I repurposed it to my dining room, but when I had a large great room I used it in many creative ways. Every three or four months I enjoyed rearranging the furniture to create a new view of the same decor. I felt like I had new furnishings even though they were several years old. Try these creative ways to use a sofa table in a great room, and give your living area a whole new look without spending extra money.

Define a Large Great Room Entryway with a Sofa Table

An open great room can look and feel too expansive for comfort. If zones are not created that define the unique functions of the room, it can blend seamlessly into adjoining areas. A sofa table can help delineate a large great room while serving double duty.

When a great room is open to a foyer, a dining room, a kitchen or another area of the home, consider centering a couch just beyond the opening to the connecting space. The back of the furnishing can be placed with the back showing when a sofa table is placed behind it. It serves double duty because it services both rooms in a unique and visually appealing way. It enhances the view of the back of the couch, and it can be used to hold a key tray, a plant or a tabletop work of art.

Use a Sofa Table Instead of a Desk to Coordinate the Furnishings

Would you like a desk that matches your great room furnishings? Buy a sofa table to match the end tables and the coffee table. Place the sofa table against a great room wall or in front of a window. Add a comfy chair and it can be used as a desk. Many sofa tables include shelf space below, and it can be embellished with baskets to hold paper and office supplies.

My sofa table is made of wrought iron and it has a slate top. It served as a unique laptop desk for my great room. I placed it a few feet from the wall in between a set of windows, but instead setting a chair on the outside where it would face the wall, I placed it against the wall. I did not want to have to stare at a wall. I gave myself a view of the television instead. The arrangement looked outstanding, and it gave me the ideal place to work on bills, articles and more.

Place a Sofa Table Beneath a Window to Hold Live Plants

Do you enjoy decorating with live plants? Ordinary plant stands are rarely adequate for holding potted plants of varying sizes, and using more than one can look like a literal hodgepodge. A sofa table makes a fantastic plant stand for a great room, but in any case the plants should not be crammed together.

During one of many room arranging adventures, I decided that I wanted to create a space for my houseplants. I moved my sofa table to the window. I did not have enough room for the plants in my kitchen or living room, and I wanted to move them to the great room since it had a large south-facing window. It was the ideal location, and the sofa table worked beautifully to hold my array of beautiful plants.
