This dried, pressed flower window decoration is a great craft for anyone who has a flower garden. It is very easy to make and is a very attractive accent for your home. Follow these easy directions and your dried, pressed flower window decoration will be hanging up in no time.
Materials Needed for the Dried Flower Window Decor
1. Three of four flower blooms
2. Two or three fern fronds
3. Waxed paper
4. A heavy book
5. Adhesive copper tape (as for stained glass projects)
6. Two sheets of 1/8 inch glass
Prepared the Flowers for the Window Decoration
The first things you need to do to make this flower window decoration are press and dry the flowers. This project is best done with relatively flat flowers such as pansies or impatiens.
Get your heavy book and open it to a page near the back. Lay a piece of the waxed paper over the book page and arrange the flowers and fern fronds on it. Make sure the vegetation does not overlap. Then, lay another piece of waxed paper over that. Close the book.
In order for the flowers and leaves to dry completely, you should leave the book in alone for up to four weeks. It is best not to check the flowers too often, as this may mess them up or introduce more moisture.
When the flowers and ferns are completely dry, it is time to prepare the window decoration.
Putting the Window Decoration Together
The first step in putting together the dried flower window decoration is cleaning the glass. The glass must be absolutely smudge and dust free, because everything that is on the glass will stay there forever if not clean.
Start by laying one piece of the glass down on the table or a towel. Carefully arrange the fern fronds and the dried, pressed flowers in a pleasing arrangement on the glass. Be sure to leave at least a half-inch empty spot around all four corners of the glass. When the flowers are arranged to your liking, carefully place the second piece of glass on top.
The last step is to attach the two pieces of glass together. Cut strips of the adhesive copper foil just a little bit longer than the edges of the glass. Peel off the paper backing and press it onto the edge of the two panes of glass. Be careful not to cut yourself!
Once the copper tape is in place, gently but firmly press each side of it onto the front and back edges of the glass. Repeat this procedure with all for sides.
Once the dried flower window decoration is complete, you can display it in your window. Use a suction cup, or drill the glass and attach a chain for hanging. You can also solder a small hook or loop of wire onto the back edges of the copper strips and hang it on a peg.
