Hors D'oeuvre

Supplies:
Appetizer picks
Card stock or small wooden shapes
Chalkboard contact paper
Hot glue

If you’re planning a wedding, party, or other celebration, you might have done the same thing many times. Because of that, each party needs different foods, decorations, and room accents. Otherwise, previous guests will have episodes of déjà vu . So, for your next get-together, how about something really different and fun? You’ll need picks for appetizers, anyway, so why not opt for easy-to-make chalkboard hors d’oeuvre picks? Each one names the food on the tray and is as cute as can be.

Guests won’t have to ask what they’re eating when you write the name of the foods on the hors d’oeuvre picks. The small, informational appetizer picks will tell all as they hold the foods, selected by guests. Sure, you’re going to throw the picks away after the party but you won’t be throwing away a lot of money. Chalkboard hors d’oeuvre picks are very inexpensive. (Optional: wash the picks and reuse.)

The best selection, when it comes to the appetizer picks that you purchase, are ones without embellishments at the top ends, and even ones that look like tiny, wooden forks. You’ll start with the ordinary hors d’oeuvre picks and create the little chalkboards that will accent them.

Little chalkboards for the appetizer picks are simple to make when you use card stock or tiny, flat, shaped pieces of wood. You can find the wooden shapes at any craft store; choose from geometric ones, animals, hearts or diamonds, and even letters or numbers. Make sure that the wooden pieces are really tiny or they’ll overwhelm your hors d’oeuvre picks. If you’re using card stock, cut the shapes that you want, and you’ll be almost finished.

Chalkboard contact paper turns the wood or card stock shapes into the little chalkboards on the picks. Cut a piece of the contact paper for each pick, stick it to the card stock or wood, and that’s it. Glue a chalkboard to each pick; these are only suitable for foods where you don’t submerse the picks in liquids.

Write the name of the hors d’oeuvre on each pick of that particular tray or plate. A guest can grab a pick, stab an appetizer, and read what it is he or she is eating. The picks are a cute way to add a new and different accent for this, your billionth party!
