Nosy Neighbors

The list of celebrities who own islands grows every year. As technology makes owning an island more practical than ever before, many celebrities have jumped on the boat and bought their own island paradises. Of course, buying your own island has a practical side for many celebrities on this list. Better than gates and electronic security, owning your own island offers a celebrity a chance to get away from paparazzi, nosy neighbors and autograph hounds.

Celebrities Who Own Islands

Naturally, most celebrities prefer to keep their homes private – after all, what’s the point of owning a private island if the whole world knows where it is? As such, some celebrity islands on this list are not specifically listed. Rather, the island’s general location is listed. But enough of that. Here are some celebrities who own their own islands.

Mel Gibson

Star of Braveheart and the Lethal Weapon series of movies, Mel Gibson owns Mago Island in Fiji. Gibson purchased the 8.4-square-mile island in 2005 for $15 million. It was previously owned by a Japanese company, the Tokyu Corporation.

After the purchase, a local tribe, the Yavusa Vuaniivi, fought to get the island back, claiming it was part of their ancestral homeland. To read their story, click HERE.
