Ceiling Painting Ideas and Tips

Faux Finishes, Painting a Ceiling, Painting Walls

Ceilings are very easy to overlook. After all, how much of your time do you spend gazing upwards towards your ceiling? However, the ceiling in your home needs paint just as the walls in your home need paint. The overall theme of your home, how much updating your home needs, and what type of ceilings you currently have will play a role in determining what ceiling paint you need. Ceiling painting ideas will follow once you gain a better understanding of what’s required to complete this type of project.

Preparation

It is a lot easier to spill or splash paint while painting a ceiling than it is while painting walls. Cover your living area with a plastic painter’s tarp before you begin painting your ceiling. Use blue painters tape to tape off any fixtures or corners on the ceilings or adjacent walls that you do not want to accidentally spill paint on. Make sure that furniture and flooring is completely covered before starting your project.

Cleaning

A ceiling is cleaned far less than any other space in your home. Dust, cobwebs, and smoke stains are all common ceiling pitfalls. Clean your ceiling thoroughly before you begin your project. If water stains are evident, be sure to call a plumber and fix any issues before you paint your ceiling. If smoke stains or other stains don’t budge, apply a layer of oil based primer and allow it to dry completely before you paint your ceiling.

Textured Ceiling

If you have a textured ceiling you may need to use a paint sprayer in order to change the color of your ceiling. Textured ceiling that crumbles or is loose can be knocked off with a paint roller. A paint sprayer helps you apply paint to the entire ceiling surface and helps you avoid knocking the texture from your ceiling. Be sure to tape up plastic tarps on your walls using blue painter’s tape in order to avoid overspray from hitting the walls of your home.

Color Inspiration

Ceilings don’t have to be the same color as your walls. If your room is in need of a pop of color, take a look at your accessories. Use a color featured in the upholstery of your furniture or the pattern of your carpets as the inspiration for the color of your ceiling. Keep the color light, as a dark ceiling will make a room feel shorter and smaller.

Decorative Options

Sometimes a coat of a single color of paint is not enough. Sometimes you may desire a more decorative ceiling. In this case, you can paint a mural on your ceiling. You can also hire a faux finisher to make your ceilings look like copper, aluminum, or even certain types of marble or wood. Faux finishes look spectacular in multi-dimensional or coffered ceilings.
