Car Reviews: 1992 Geo Prizm

Most Fuel Efficient Cars, Power Steering

As anyone who has ever searched for a used car is likely well aware, there are a near infinite amount of choices available for those who would like to save some money and get a reliable used car over a brand new one. Some even feel that certain older cars are far more reliable than new cars. While it may sometimes be difficult to find the perfect used car, one stands out above the rest, the 1992 Geo Prizm. The Prizm is one of the most reliable and most fuel efficient cars ever produced, and for those who don’t mind losing some features, it can be a wonderful car that will provide many, many years of loyal service.

Even though it may look a little plain on the outside, the 1992 Geo Prizm is by no means unattractive. Offering a simple design theory, a little boxy style, wide headlights, and small, but fitting wheels that frame out the rest of the body nicely. Even though the Prizm is definitely a simple car, it is functional, and one would not be embarrassed to be seen behind the wheel of this car. Although it is a fairly small vehicle, it still offers a decent sized body, compared to other Geo offerings such as the Storm and the Metro.

The inside of the Geo Prizm seems to follow the same basic idea as the exterior, simple function without a lot of fun. Although all of the controls are easy to operate, and although the model lacks items such as air-conditioning and power steering, the car sets up the driver to operate the vehicle without any distractions. The driver has a clear cut view of the road, and on the manual transmission models, the clutch pedal is easy to press and shifting feels natural. Despite the outward appearances, the 1992 Geo is actually a very comfortable car, and one that can definitely handle four adult passengers for an extended period of time without inducing claustrophobia on it’s occupants.

While the Geo may not seem to be a car that one would even want to take on a road trip, actually driving the car may be surprising. Despite the lack of power steering, the Geo Prizm does move nicely, and steering while moving is not a chore or even boring. However, due to the lack of power steering, getting the car out of a parking space may be a bit of a challenge. However, the main draw to the Prizm is not the way it drives or even what it looks like. What makes the Geo such a popular car, and the older models such a steal at their usually low prices is the fact that they are some of the most reliable and best built cars on the road. Simply put, the Geo Prizm will run forever as long the owner takes decent care of the model. Another great feature of the car is it’s incredible gas mileage. Even though the 1.6 liter four cylinder engine may not move the car around with that much authority (although the manual models are kind of peppy) the car gets an average of over 35 miles to the gallon, whether it be highway or city. Couple this with the fact that parts and service for the car is very cheap, and you can find yourself a reliable, long running and comfortable car all for under two thousand dollars.

Indeed, the Geo Prizm simply seems to be one of the miracles of the automotive world. Cheap, reliable, and great on gas, the Geo really has everything that a person needs if they don’t mind the lack of exterior sophistication or interior style, the Geo really does have a lot to offer it’s owners. It may not be the flashiest or most technologically advanced vehicle on the road, but the Geo gets the job done, and it is a car that most would be more than happy with.
