Can Outdoor Plastic Furniture and Toys Be Painted?

Exterior Paint, Interior Painting, Kids Furniture, Paint Brush

Outdoor plastic furniture comes in a limited array of colors. They are usually forest green, drab tan, or white, and in time they begin looking sun faded and dingy, no matter the hue. Kid’s toys including plastic slides, playhouses, and other outdoor items also become faded by the sun and look old before their time, even when they are still sturdy and useable. They end up becoming eyesores because many people are unaware they can be painted, and they are eventually thrown away.

Instead of throwing away plastic furniture, outdoor toys, and other items, consider painting them. In years past, painted plastic did not usually fare well. Even when primed, it ended up peeling and looking far worse than it did before it was painted, but with the latest and greatest mediums for plastic, many more outdoor items can be painted and spared from being tossed aside because of their color or lack thereof.

Paint for Plastic that Works

Visit a local discount store, home improvement store, or another retailer that sells paint, and you will discover more than typical spray-on varieties used by graffiti artists and those trying to recover rusty furniture. Outdoor plastic furniture, toys, and other synthetic items can be coated with a medium especially formulated for plastic. Krylon brand offers a product called Fusion, and it does not require sanding or priming to create a long-lasting painted surface that becomes chip-resistant seven days after application. Best of all, it comes in metallic and textured shades as well as over one dozen unique colors.

Painted Outdoor Tables and Plastic Chairs

Think back on the number of plastic chairs, outdoor tables, and other pieces of outdoor furniture that have been tossed away because they looked worn and discolored. They could have been saved and painted with a product especially designed to adhere to plastic.

Before knowing that plastic could be painted, I threw away a small outdoor table that would have been perfect for holding drinks, magazines, or outdoor decor on my back patio or porch. Now I wish I would have painted it with textured paint for plastic. Cheap items such as this can look much heavier and far more impressive, and my once worn piece of outdoor furniture would have looked like new.

It is good to know that plastic outdoor furniture and other items can be painted and saved, and unless they are broken I will never again throw away another outdoor table or chair. An outdoor table with a metallic look would be very eye-catching and unique, and it is amazing that ordinary plastic can be painted to look like it is made of something more durable and far more original than anything sold in stores.

Painted Playhouses and Other Plastic Toys

My kids are too old for outdoor toys made for toddlers and preschoolers, but I have passed many yards filled with sun-faded outdoor toys meant for climbing and sliding that were extremely dull and ugly. Although these outdoor toys were in otherwise sturdy condition, the toys are probably not used. Many were in pieces and strewn all over the lawn. When painted with special paint for synthetic materials, these outdoor toys would look like new, and they would be far more appealing to kids.

Toys and furniture are just some of the synthetic outdoor items that can be painted. Everything from planters to yard decor can be painted to look brand new. Even an entirely new set of synthetic patio furniture can be painted from drab common colors to bright and eye-catching designer pieces. Look for Krylon brand Fusion paint, and transform old faded plastic or new but ugly plastic into something that looks as good as or better than new with a colorful designer touch.
