Buying Refurbished GPS Systems

Garmin Nuvi, Gps Systems

Have you been eyeing a cool new electronics device? Something sleek and elegant like the Garmin Nuvi 3790T portable GPS? If you have, but you just can’t bring yourself to pay a premium for the latest generation, consider buying refurbished GPS devices and other electronics.

Take the Garmin Nuvi 3790T. It is the portable GPS system with the style and sturdy feel of the Apple iPhone. The 3790T is only 8.9mm thick, has a sturdy aluminum chassis and is a fine piece of technology. It also comes at a steep price. So why not save some money and buy refurbished GPS systems?

In most cases, buying refurbished electronics is a very safe bet. A refurbished product is simply a product that was returned to the retailer for any number of reasons, but in most cases it was returned because of some form of buyer’s remorse. It’s not at all like buying used, because the refurbished product has been run back through the factory, gone through final test and final inspection and is basically a new product. Based on my experience in the technology manufacturing business, a huge percentage of returns needed only new packaging and documentation. To make the decision even safer, most refurbished products, including the Garmin Nuvi 3790T, come with a full one year warranty from the manufacturer.

In addition to spending many years manufacturing, and therefore refurbishing, technology products, I have also purchased my fair share. From computers to cell phones to televisions to GPS systems, and I have had good luck with them all. Of course, there is some risk with buying refurbished GPS systems and other electronics, but the risk is minimal. Frankly, it’s not much greater than buying new. However, I do make a distinction between factory refurbished and store refurbished. In general I always prefer a manufacturer’s warranty and I would always buy from a reputable retailer. Our top choice has always been Amazon.

Here’s the thing about buying refurbished GPS devices and other electronics: The savings can be substantial at times, and very small at others. This is called supply and demand. When the supply of refurbished product is high, the price goes down and vice versa. These days, however, saving $50 on a $300 device is nothing to sneeze at, especially when you are still getting a new product right back out of the factory.

If we stick with the example of the Garmin Nuvi 3790T, you can get an elegant, stylish, feature-rich GPS system for $299 if you buy it refurbished today. Last week you may have saved more but next week you might not save as much – but you always save.

The Bottom Line:

If you’re in the market for a top-of-the-line GPS system at a great price, consider buying refurbished….factory refurbished. Also consider buying refurbished for some of your other low-risk electronics. It’s a great way to save money and since most now come with full warranties, it’s a safe way to save money.
