Brevard Zoo, Viera FL – a Review

Big Feet, Brevard, Otters

Brevard Zoo is located in Viera, Florida at 8225 N Wickham Road in Melbourne, FL 32940. The zoo is centrally located in Brevard County Florida for all of the county residents to take advantage of a wonderful learning experience and a fun outing. Prices for single admission to the zoo range from $9.50 for children to $12.50 for adults. Year long passes are well worth the $75 to $95 cost.

Brevard Zoo offers over 35 animals. These animals include Florida Alligators, Crocodiles, Alpaca, Pygmy Goats, Tortoises of different kinds, Pythons, Giraffes, Rhinoceroses, monkeys of all kinds, Lemurs, and so many birds you couldn’t count them, there were even bats.

Anteaters were a personal favorite. They were ugly and cute all at the same time. Ostriches were plentiful. Brevard Zoo also houses deer, wolves, foxes, flamingo, bob cats, bald eagles, and even river otters. River otters aren’t often seen in the wild. With the opportunity of a swim glass, you can view the otters in their “natural” habitat.

Brevard Zoo is separated into five areas. All the animals are kept in the area that is their natural habitat. There is the Africa section, La Selva or “the jungle” section, Austral-Asia section, Wild Florida, and Paws on. There is also a train ride through the zoo as well as kayaking.

In the Austral-Asia section is a bird habitat that you can walk through. The birds will actually land on you. You can also feed these birds. In this walk through there are bats. The bats don’t bother anyone, they just hang upside down and sleep.

The kids will enjoy the Paws on Section where they can pretend to be vets. As the children fix the different animals’ problems there is a television showing live vet material. You will feel like you are at a veterinarian’s office at Brevard Zoo.

There is also an indoor sand “box” where you can discover bones. One of the best enjoyments for kids of all ages is the wet park at the Brevard Zoo. Kids can walk through the splashing pond. In Florida this is a great year round activity.

Another activity for the kids of all ages is the petting zoo inside Brevard Zoo. The alpacas, pygmy goats and even deer are available for petting. You can stand in the cage with them and scratch their necks or behind their ears and they will follow you around.

One of the best features has to be the train ride. You get to see the animals up close and the Ostriches will follow and race the train. It’s extremely entertaining. On a personal note, if you have big feet you may want to skip the train ride. I wear a size 10 women’s shoe and the heel of the shoe was against the bottom of the seat and the toe of my shoe was curved up against the wall of the next seat. This means guys if your foot is over a size 8 skip the train.

If you get tired or hungry there is a food court at the Brevard Zoo. Prices are reasonable and you can sit for a rest. Brevard Zoo also has a gift shop with great prices depending on what you purchase. You can purchase stuffed animals for $4.99. The animals are made by Ty and are good quality.
