Breakfast Nook Decorating: Toile Stenciled Window Seat

Toile

Ok, so if you have a breakfast nook or window seat in your kitchen and want a shabby chic look on a budget, then you will love this twist on the toile look. Traditionally you might expect the shabby chic toile to be on the seat of the breakfast bench or window seat, but in this case we are going to go for a solid colored seat cushion and use toile stencils around the base of the window seat!

This vintage craft project is simple and should cost you $25 or less per shabby chic Window Seat. The most expensive part is the Window Seat, which apparently you must already have.

For this Shabby Chic Toile Window Seat Craft Project You Will Need:

Wooden Window Seat
2″ Paint Brush
Stencil Brush
Scissors
Toile Stencils

Paint (in one color like red or yellow or black)
Pencil

The first step is to find you a toile fabric stencil. Check your local craft store. If they do not have one then simply search online. There are tons available!

Now, you need to go ahead and put a fresh coat of paint on your window seat. If you have the same paint you painted it with before then add a coat. If not, then prime first and throw on a coat of white paint.

If your window seat or breakfast nook is a color, then you need to stencil in white.

Use one Wood Window Seat for the base of this Shabby Chic project.

Tip: If you want your bench or breakfast nook to have texture then try decoupaging white tissue paper onto it. Allow this to dry then stencil your toile on top of that.

Now, all you need to do is place your stencil, tape it down, and start stenciling. I remounted working from left to right and working along until your cover the entire sides and front of the window seat in stencils.

Continue this stenciling process until you cover the entire wooden shabby chic Window Seat.

To antique your “toile fabric” Breakfast Nook Window Seat you can rub a wood gel stain onto the dried paint. It is important to evenly coat the entire surface.

Wipe the wood gel stain off with a clean dry cloth. Allow this to dry for at least an hour. Now, you can continue to put as many coats on the window seat as you wish. The seat will darken up considerably each time. You can always practice on a scrap board to achieve the look you want.

Let this final step dry and you are finished.

Now, just to really finish off your shabby chi window seat I recommend having the cushion be made in a solid color that matches the color you used to stencil your toile! This will tie the look together and create finished professional results. It is always nice to have a colored window seat cushion to help hide dirt from kids and pets that might sit there!
